Bone Health Campaign for Girls 9-12

=20

The National Bone Health Campaign uses a social marketing approach to promote optimal bone health among girls 9-12 years of age in an effort to reduce their risk of osteoporosis later in life. Resources for this campaign include a Web site for girls, and print materials, radio and print advertisements for girls and parents. This campaign is a result of a partnership between two agencies of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Office on Women's Health), and the National Osteoporosis Foundation. To reach girls where they live and play, the campaign includes print materials for girls, developed in collaboration with government and nonprofit organizations, including state health departments and the Girl Scouts of the USA, and Girls Inc.; and print and radio advertisements for girls and parents.

Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance

=20

United States, 2005, from the National Centers for Disease Control, Division of Adolescent and School Health, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, the CDC's Division of Adult and Community Health, National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion, and from ORC Macro.

From the Introduction: "Unhealthy and risky behaviors are often established during childhood and adolescence and extend into adulthood.
To monitor health-risk behaviors among young people in the United States, CDC developed the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System, which monitors a sampling of students in public and private schools across the country in grades 9-12. This report presents findings from the 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Survey, which indicates a positive trend of a decreasing prevalence of unhealthy behaviors among the nation's youth since 1991. However, many young people continue to engage in risky behaviors that vary across cities and states."
