Dear HEDIR Colleagues,

Below is a piece of a report I'm writing about the "Finding Your Inner Leader" conference held July 21 in Brooklyn NY that was sponsored by the Greater New York Society for Public Health Education, Kingsborough Community College and the Brooklyn Borough President's Office. The conference offered

7 CECHs for CHES.

As I tell all who will listen, I believe that leadership is a theme around which all 9 health education might come together for a single, professionwide conference in the near future. KDG Consulting has developed a one day conference agenda and a two and a half day model. I am mentioning this only because, as everyone who knows me knows, I would like to see more collaborative unified efforts among our professional organizations, and, eventually, over time, a united single organization coordinating the promotion of health education and the professional development of practitioners of health education.

Maybe the description below of the recent conference might spark some interest and we can create a groundswell of interest for a professional convocation on health education leadership.

Wishing you a safe and healthy summer.

Draft

There was standing room only at the July 21 "Finding Your Inner Leader: An 'Aha!' Conference for Aspiring Community and Public Health Leaders."

The conference attracted health professionals from Amityville, Long Island to Austin, Texas and received rave reviews for the program content and the conference facility, Kingsborough Community College. Summarizing the unanimous comments on the conference evaluations, keynote speaker Ms.

Hernandez wrote the next day, "., Kingsborough Community College was a great venue and I was totally impressed with the facility and campus."

Conference Content Relevant, Practical, and Energizing

The planning committee including members of the Greater New York Society for Public Health Education, Kingsborough Community College, the Brooklyn Borough President's Office, the Public Health Association of New York City, and the Greater Southern Brooklyn Health Coalition tapped dynamic and compelling community leaders who inspired and educated the audience:

Brooklyn Deputy Borough President Yvonne Graham; Paloma Izquierdo-Hernandez, the CEO & President of Urban Health Plan; Richard Gitlin, director of The Gitlin Group, an organization and leadership development consulting resource; and Sana Reynolds, a managerial and cross-cultural communication consultant and adjunct associate professor of communication at Baruch College.

At the lunchtime Conversations with Courageous Leaders session, participants were able to ask specific, often blunt, and always very practical questions about leadership challenges, which were addressed openly and honestly by community health leaders Joyce Y. Hall, Executive Director, Federation of County Networks; Christobal Jacques, HIV Prevention Specialist, NYC Dept. of Health and Mental Hygiene; Ngozi Moses, Founding Executive Director, Brooklyn Perinatal Network; and Maria Yomtov, Director, Center for Community Health Promotion & Wellness, SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

Organizations that helped promote the program were Gay Men's Health Crisis, Greater Southern Brooklyn Health Coalition, the Public Health Association of New York City, the VA New York Harbor Healthcare Systems and the NYC Department of Youth and Community Services.

Participants particularly enjoyed and valued the individual and group activities conducted throughout the conference. They took away new paradigms for approaching situations as leaders. The handouts included major principles presented by the guest speakers and a participant list was provided to facilitate future networking. The seaside location provided the perfect setting for the reflection so essential to good leadership.

Conference Chair Notes Incredible Support Provided by Colleagues, Sponsors and Cosponsors

Conference planning was spearheaded by Karen Denard Goldman, PhD, CHES of Kingsborough Community College's Department of Health, Physical Education and Recreation, and director of "KDG Health Education and Promotion Consulting."

"It takes a whole campus," Goldman noted, "to make campus-community partnerships work. I am grateful for the top-notch professional support provided by colleagues and friends from the Greater New York Society for Public Health Education, my department chair, Sam Scherek, my faculty colleagues, and all the Special Events, College Advancement, Custodial, Building Maintenance, and Public Safety staff at KCC that rallied to make this conference a success. I particularly thank Amanda Hitchins of the KCC Health Career Center and KCC students Chaya Goodman, Samira Mohammed, and Carlene Williams for their incredibly hard volunteer work at the conference.

We couldn't have done it without them.

"And last but not least, heartfelt thanks to GNYSOPHE President Alozie Ogbonna, Jean Tyler, GNY-SOPHE's fantastic treasurer, and volunteer Madeline Britt who managed registration and provided on going support and advice.

Their time, energy, and expertise was indispensible."
