Folks.this message is intended for those individuals who are teaching summer school at either a community college or a 4 year institution (undergraduate and/or graduate).

I need some help and I'm hoping you can be of assistance. I am working with a bright young lady who is a McNair Scholar (McNair Scholars are undergraduates who work with a faculty member to conduct research-preparing them for graduate school-it is named after Ron McNair the astronaut/physicist who died on the Challenger explosion in 1986), This young lady (Miranda) is wanting to assess attitudes that college students have about putting personal information on social networks such as MySpace.com or Facebook.com (although it's not just limited to those two).
Her original plan was to access the MySpace.com site and drop a message to those who are profiled requesting them to complete a brief survey. However, after the problems that MySpace.com officials have had recently they have balked at allowing her to send a message via their site.

Thus, this is where you (participants on the HEDIR) come in. Miranda is in need of having people who use MySpace.com or some other similar site to complete a brief survey. The survey is on-line at www.hedir.org/mcnair ...
it doesn't require any identification (i.e., name) and will take about 5 minutes to complete. If you are teaching a course (any course) this summer, would you ask your students to participate in this survey? For your convenience I've written up a request that you can copy and distribute (if so desired). Unfortunately, the timeline is rather short.we need to have all surveys completed by June 30. I know the HEDIR has come through for many people who have made previous requests and I'm confident that the people on this list will once again come through. I thank you, and Miranda (future health educator) thanks you.

Memo to students:

Hi, my name is Miranda Griffith and I'm a McNair Scholar here at Southern Illinois University. I am involved in a research project this summer and I am need of your help.

If you are involved with any of the internet's social network sites such as MySpace.com or Facebook.com I would like your help by completing a brief survey on the web.

Obviously, this is voluntary and we are not asking for any names or other identifying marks. We will keep the information confidential to the fullest extent possible.

If you would like to help, please go to www.hedir.org/mcnair. I'm collecting data until June 30, so your help before that date would be greatly appreciated.

Miranda Griffith
