Connect with Kids Program to Focus on Obesity Prevention

=20

Connect with Kids (CWK), in partnership with CDC's Division of Adolescent and School Health (DASH), the Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity (DNPA), and Florida's Department of Health have developed a 30-minute television program focusing on the obesity epidemic among youth. The program, titled "The Biggest Generation" will be available for airing nationwide beginning March 15th 2006. CDC provided technical input on the program's content and Howell Wechsler, Director, DASH, was interviewed for the broadcast.=20

=20

CWK will send the program to their station partners on March 15th-you will need to check your local station for airdates and times. A listing of the participating local stations is attached. If your local station is not listed on the attachment and you are interested in promoting the program to your local television station, please call Jared Blass at CWK
(404-459-8081 ext. 105). He can provide you with information and resources and possibly assist you in working with your local station to air the program. =20

=20

To check to see when the stations have scheduled the show, please go to
www.connectwithkids.com <http://www.connectwithkids.com/> Click on TV
Programs for Families on the left, and then click on "playing" in the body of the text. There you'll find a list of all our station partners and the airdates for all upcoming shows. The stations have wide discretion as to when they will air the show. Most will air the shows within 60 days of the feed date (March 15th). Some stations schedule many months out, others schedule a month at a time, so you may have to check a couple of times to see when the show is scheduled in your area.

CWK is a private news and education company that focuses exclusively on youth issues. They have contracts with 70 local television stations across the country, which guarantees airtime for their programs. CWK produces 10 half-hour television specials a year and five news stories each week reaching about 65 percent of all U.S. households. =20

How to Maximize the Impact of "The Biggest Generation"

All State Education Agencies (SEAs), Local Education Agencies (LEAs) and state and local health departments have the opportunity to leverage the airing of the documentary to promote ongoing healthy weight programs and activities. We are encouraging you to share this opportunity with your colleagues and hope it is beneficial for your constituents. For additional information and resources related to physical activity and nutrition, go to: http://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/ or http://www.cdc.gov/nccdphp/dnpa/index.htm

Here's what you can do:

* Contact your local television station to share ways they could
promote exemplary physical education or nutrition education programs in your state, local community or school by filming stellar programs at local schools and airing the local success stories around the time of this national broadcast.

* Identify additional activities that you or your schools or
communities can organize such as:=20

* Distributing and implementing the School Health Index or similar
tool

* Hosting meetings or roundtables with members of active School
Health Advisory Councils=20

* Sharing success stories from your state through online forums
(http://www.cdc.gov/healthyyouth/shi/stories-comments.htm)

* Host all-school events focusing on physical activity and
nutrition;=20

* Working with student groups to deliver nutrition and physical
activity events.

=20

* Promote the program to students, families and schools. CWK will
develop and provide a flier to help with the promotion of the program.

* States and Districts, collaborating with school administrators,
can promote the program during morning announcements, and by distributing posters and back pack fliers.

* Schools can include information about the program on their school
Web site.
