Dear Colleagues,
I am looking for a textbook to use in an introductory course in health promotion and health education. Any suggestions? Also, does anyone know of any textbooks to prepare for the CHES?
Thank you!
Mary

Mary:

I would encourage you to examine the introductory text I co-authored with Jim McKenzie and Jim Girvan: Principles and Foundations of Health Promotion and Education 3rd ed. It was published by Benjamin Cummings in 2006. I have cc'd the publisher and will ask them to send you an examination copy. Best of luck with your course and textbook decision.

For CHES preparation I would recommend:

A course that I had at the master's level was also a combination undergraduate course. We used the textbook planning implementing and evaluationg health promotion programs (3rd ed) by James F Mackenzie and Jan L. Smeltzer. I found it really helpful. I also used it in addition to the study guide for my ches exam. It worked wonders Janelle Edwards, MPH,CHES Coordinator Ohio HIV Evaluation and Training Project

Hi,

We have a new book on health literacy that is in press right now and will be on shelves in June. Descriptions of the book are online and it can be purchased at Amazon and Barnes & Noble. Instructors can request an evaluation copy via the Jossey-Bass website at http://www.josseybass.com/WileyCDA/WileyTitle/productCd
-0787984337.html.

We hope introductory courses such as you describe will find all or parts of the book useful as it includes a mix of history, theory, case studies, and practical guidelines.

Book title and authors are:

Advancing Health Literacy: A Framework for Understanding and Action Christina Zarcadoolas, Andrew Pleasant, David Greer Jossey-Bass

Best,

Andrew Pleasant
