University of Connecticut, Center for Public Health & Health Policy=20 announces
a new doctoral program (Ph.D.) in Public Health=20 with a concentration in
Social and Behavioral Health Sciences =20 This interdisciplinary, cross-campus
Ph.D. program will prepare future public health leaders with the skills needed
to enhance health in human populations. The Social and Behavioral Health
Sciences concentration within the doctoral program in public health will offer
students specialized instruction in the theory and methods that emphasize the
social, psychological and behavioral influences on health, illness and injury.

The University of Connecticut has internationally recognized faculty and
research programs in Social and Behavioral Sciences, and 25 faculty members from
various departments throughout the University have committed to join the field
of study. These faculty members have strong research programs in the areas of
HIV prevention, sexual risk behavior, community nutrition, women's health,
behavioral risk factor intervention in primary health care, social and
psychiatric epidemiology, and tobacco control.

This program is a result of several years of preparation and development. In
June 2002, the University of Connecticut Health Center documented a need for
doctoral training in public health in Connecticut.
President Philip Austin formed the Center for Public Health and Health Policy in
April 2004, and one of its first initiatives was to develop appropriate doctoral
programs in public health. In September 2005, the Board of Trustees approved the
Ph.D. program in Public Health. The CT Department of Higher Education Board of
Governors unanimously licensed the new Ph.D. program on April 19, 2006 until
April, 2009.
