Not for nothing, as they say, but have you tried Health Education Tools of the Trade? See www.sophe.org <http://www.sophe.org/> for more information.
More and more faculty who teach practical courses require it, and people are
giving copies as gifts to graduating health educators. Kathleen Schmalz
and I have been writing them since 1992 and the column appears in every issue - except supplements - of Health Promotion Practice. It's $30 ish, I believe - less for SOPHE members.

Just a thought.

I am in need of a text that is an overviews health issues and

discusses about how new health professionals need do their jobs, in

practice. I don't intend to teach them much new information about

health but how to apply what they have learned, so the text is an

overview of what they have already learned. It is a practical

applications class but the text I was using is no longer in print.

Can anyone recommend a good text? It is a class with Juniors and

seniors. Thank you.

The conference includes dynamic keynotes, real conversations with current public health leaders and role models, and opportunities to discover personal leadership strengths and the many levels of leadership opportunities available in the next five years – particularly in addressing health disparities.

With time between sessions to process what you’ve learned and to network, network, network.

The former president at the University of Maine at Farmington was Einar Olson...a health educator who was chair at Mankato State University in the 1960's and became president at UMF sometime in the early 70's. Dr. Olson hired me (sight unseen) while I was finishing my masters at Mankato in 1978 to teach at UMF.

Additional people are Jim Girvan, Boise State...Paul Sarvela, Dean Applied Sciences and Arts at SIU; Ken McLeroy at Texas A & M's School of Rural Public Health, John Bonaguro, Dean at Western Kentucky; Don Calitri, retired, but Associate Dean at Eastern Kentucky

As a fellow health educator in Texas, I congratulate Steve Dorman on his impending appointment to the position of Dean of the College of Health and Human Performance, University of Florida. Steve is returning from the "land of the armadillos and aligators" to the "land of the 'gators". Those of you who were in Salt Lake City for the AAHPERD Annual Convention probably learned this news.

How many health educators are in positions of dean or higher in universities? The following come to mind:

Deans

Steve Dorman - Florida (August 1, 2006)
Guy Parcel - U of Texas -School of Public Health (Houston) Bob Gold - Maryland Kelli McCormack-Brown - South Florida Jeff Brandon - New Mexico State Larry Olsen (Associate Dean) - New Mexico State Audrey Gotsch - UMDNJ Glenn Gilbert - East Carolina

Past Deans

Noreen Clark - Michigan
Pete Cortese (Associate Dean of Allied Health) - Cal State at Long Beach Ralph Boatman (Allied Health) - University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill John Lamb - East Tennessee Elixabeth McMahan (Graduate School) - East Tennessee Elaine Vitello (Allied Health) - Southern Illinois Don Breckon - Central Michigan Barbara Cramer (Allied Health) - Texas Woman's Thomas Dunye (Allied Health) - Jackson State (MS)
Note: I have forgotten the name of the former dean of allied health at Memphis State U, which is now the University of Memphis.

Presidents

Jim Rosser - Cal State at Los Angeles
Andy Sorenson - South Carolina

Former Presidents

Don Breckon - Park College (Parkville, MO)
Note: I have forgotten the name of the one from Maine.

Please add to this list. I know that I have overlooked some.

The National SOPHE Resolutions committee is seeking past resolution authors and new members to serve on the committee.
Duties include ensuring that action items stated in accepted resolutions are being actively pursued, reviewing new resolutions for recommendation to the Board of Trustees for adoption and updating resolutions already passed.
This is also a wonderful opportunity for authors of past resolutions to become actively involved in assuring that action items are carried out.
