I was wondering if anyone uses the term "community health promotion" to name their department, degree, etc.? This has come up in our department in a huge debate this week as the "new national trend."

Thank you for your responses in advance.

Very helpful. A related question is what can the professions (specifically,

HE/HP) and their organizations do in terms of collaboration and cooperation to foster change? I include Departments of Public and Community Health, Health Education, Health Promotion, etc.? How can the professions best work with organizations listed by Mark, and others like Physicians for Social Responsibility, Greepeace and other environmental groups, etc.?

Cast Your Vote for Protection of Public Health and the Environment

Dear Daniel,=20

From global warming and air pollution to nuclear terrorism and =

proliferation, the U.S. faces a wide range of threats to both the health =

and security of the public as well as the ecosystems on which we depend. =

But with the mid-term elections now less than a week away, we have a =

tremendous opportunity to ensure that our political leaders in =

Washington and at the local level are committed to protecting public =

health and protecting our communities and the environment. PSR =

encourages you to find out where your candidates stand on these =

important security and environmental health issues and to support those =

individuals who put public well-being at the top of their agenda. =20

To help guide you, PSR has prepared Protecting Health, Preserving =

the Environment and Propelling the Economy: An Environmental Health =

Briefing Book, which provides summaries of fifteen key environmental =

issues confronting the nation today. The briefs describe current =

policies and programs that link health, the environment and the economy =

and propose policy changes that can optimize concern for all three =

areas.=20

PSR has also developed its Prescription for a Secure and Healthy =

America, which offers answers to the most pressing security and public =

health challenges of our day. =20

We hope you will review these briefing materials, as they will =

serve as excellent guides to the major issues of the upcoming election =

and the 110th Congress that will begin in January, 2007.

We all can play a role in reversing current trends of =

environmental degradation, nuclear terrorism and weapons proliferation. =

On November 7, cast your vote for environmental protection and help =

secure the health and well-being of our nation.=20

One thing - when funds were made available in this country to help get new heating systems, the popularity of the need for those funds surprised the officials.

There has been a recommendation to replace old heating with new because the new ones are more efficient. Also, for the time being, pellets seem to be way to replace more polluting options such as oil heating in this country, and it may be an option in the northern belt. (The Finnish Prime Minister was saying that we need to replace oil with more environmentally feasible options. I believe he even suggested a timeline for it.)

I suppose one way would be to help people change those elements and behaviors that have immediacy. During the winter, heating is one such element: changing old heating units and lowering temperatures in places where it is feasible and possible.

- Snow piled up last night, truckers are blocking roads, and now the temp is lowering to minus C weather. "And so it goes!"

Dan,

In response to your question about collaboration I think one thing we can do is keep it from becoming a black and white issue. I think we need to acknowledge that there are times and places where our professional organizations are communicating and collaborating in tandem with brother and sister agencies. At a smaller level I saw on the Physicians for Social Responsibility website that they will be at APHA. Communication and connection. On a bigger level, APHA, along with many other organizations were part of the call for the FDA Approval of OTC Sales of Plan B and also advocated for broader access. So the more accurate question is what more can be done....

While not quite ready to give up the subject, I wanted to point folks to the latest issue of Mother Jones Magazine that has an excellent article on the "Thirteenth Tipping Point." The article references a 2004 report identifying 12 global-warming tipping points that could potentially initiate sudden, catastrophic changes across the planet. In this article a13th tipping point but this one is the solution tipping point. The article defines this tipping point as "the shift in human perception from personal denial to personal responsibility." and argues that "Without a 13th tipping point, we can't hope to avoid global mayhem. With it, we can attempt to put into action what we profess: that we actually care about our children's and grandchildren's futures."

For those that don't subscribe to MoJo, (come on its 10 bucks a year) you can read the article online at: http://www.motherjones.com/news/feature/2006/11/13th_tipping_point.html

Hello

Does anyone have any information/data/facts that I could use Thursday,

when I meet with the administrative team, to justify why we shouldn't use

recess as a discipline, or why sitting for 80 minutes isn't healthy for

our kids without a stretch break?

I know that this is last minute but anything would be great!

Bonjour à tous,

We, the Executive Editors, are currently seeking additional reviewers for

JACH. JACH is indexed in several databases including Index Medicus and is

the professional journal for the American College Health Association

(www.acha.org). ACHA founded in 1920 is the principal advocate and

leadership organization for college and university health. JACH has been

published since 1958, originally as Student Medicine.

Being a reviewer is one of the first steps in becoming a Consulting Editor

for JACH. This category may be seen as an "entry-level" option for those

who would be interested in trying their hands at editing, but who have

little or no prior editorial experience OR for those with experience who

would like to review articles for JACH. This category may also be

appropriate for those potential reviewers who have only one particular

area of interest in which they would like to receive articles; others may

have a broad interest in college health and be willing to consider

submissions that do not fit into specific categories. Such reviewers are

of great value to the journal and do not have to be members of ACHA. Your

initial reviews and comments are forwarded to the Executive Editors.

Those interested should go to the manuscript central website at

http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/heldref/jach, click on "Instructions &

Forms," and download the "Reviewer Data Sheet." After completing the form,

return it to the Managing Editor, Ms. Deanna Lowery, Heldref at the

address listed on the form. All reviewers are acknowledged in the journal

each year in the May/June issue.

If you would be interested please complete the ad hoc reviewer form. If

you have any questions, please contact me.

Merci beaucoup,

Reginald

I know what APHA as an organization is doing. It and many of its sections

and caucuses are outstanding. My question is what are the Health

Education/Health Promotion section and specific HEHP organizations like

AAHE, ASHA, and SOPHE doing? Should the topic of HD be included in courses

of study up the educational ladder?

You are right. The Mother Jones article is excellent in its description of

the problem, and more importantly, in suggestions on what can be done. It is

MUST reading. One of the most comprehensive articles I've read. Just what I

have been looking for. Its recommendations can be generalized to other forms

of HD.
