-------------------------------------------------------Graduate Preparation= in Student Affairs and Higher Education and Graduate Assistantship = Positions Northern Illinois University=92s Division of Student Affairs, in = partnership with the Department of Counseling, Adult and Higher Education, = is currently accepting applications for available 2007-2008 Graduate = Assistantships in the Division of Student Affairs and admission to either = the M.S.Ed. in Adult and Higher Education or the Ed.D. in Adult and Higher = Education programs. Graduate Work in Adult and Higher EducationTh= e NIU Adult and Higher Education program in the College of Education = offers professional preparation for students at the master=92s and = doctoral levels for entry-level and leadership roles in adult and higher = education. In selecting a program of courses leading to the master=92s or = doctoral degree in Adult and Higher Education, students should be aware of = the many roles that they are likely to find themselves in as administrators= and educators. Students have a choice of four general areas of study and = are strongly encouraged to take the courses identified under each = category, pursuant to preparation for those roles. The areas of study =
are: Adult Continuing Education International, Community and Popular = Education Human Resource Development Student Affairs and Higher Education = AHE faculty are focused on facilitating a strong practice-based program of = study that includes innovative and engaging courses, work experiences = through internships and assistantships, and a sense of community among our = practitioners and scholars. The Student Affairs and Higher Education Area = of Study in Adult and Higher Education is designed for students interested = in positions in student activities, academic advising, orientation, = fraternity/sorority life, financial aid, admissions, alumni development, = multi-cultural and LGBT support services, housing and residence life, and = administrative positions in community colleges, four-year institutions, = and other post-secondary environments from the entry to senior level. = Available graduate degrees in the program include: The Master of Science = in Education*Adult and Higher Education is a 36-semester-hour program that = offers theoretical and methodological bases for professional development, = while providing comprehensive pre-service education for persons seeking = careers in adult and higher education. Students generally select courses = that relate to one of the four areas of study listed above. For students = interested in the Student Affairs area of study, the program ensures that = students investigate the range of issues in student affairs administration,= but still have the flexibility to explore particular areas of interest to = individual students. The program provides opportunities for individualizati= on to take into account the student=92s personal goals and needs, and = usually includes 1-2 faculty-supervised internships in addition to current = full-time or graduate assistantship work experience. The program of study = meets the standards of the Council for Advancement of Standards in Higher = Education (CAS). The Doctor of Education*Adult and Higher Education is a = 63-semester-hour program beyond the master=92s degree that provides a = flexible system of professional study, with course work in areas of = instruction, administration, and research, to prepare both generalists and = specialists in the field. Graduate students in adult and higher education = prepare for leadership roles in a variety of adult and higher education = endeavors. Students learn how to assist others to enhance their present = roles or to prepare for new roles in society.
