Subject: RE: web-based survey and HEDIR

As a Ph.D. student in Health Education at Texas A&M University, I am conducting my dissertation research to survey health educators' likelihood of adopting genetic/genomic competencies for heath promotion research and practice. I need your help with my dissertation research...

You will have the opportunity to win $50 and learn more about genetics/genomics and health promotion, if you participate in my on-line survey. Study findings will be presented at professional conferences, written up for peer-reviewed publication, and potentially guide future health educators-oriented genetics/genomics training. This study is anonymous and IRB approved.

Currently, Genetics/Genomics is a "hot topic" in public health. Genomics, an expansion of genetics, is "the study of the functions and interactions of all the genetic material in the genome, including interactions with environmental factors." For example, cancer and diabetes are genomics-related diseases (the result of genetic and environmental interaction). The completion of the Human Genome Project is producing more genomic information/technologies, including genetic testing for breast cancer (BRCA1/2) and other potential diseases (e.g. diabetes, caner, and heart diseases), prenatal testing, newborn screening, family history screening tool, gene therapy, stem cell research and cloning...

As a health educator, I am interested in your views regarding health educators' role in genomics. If you are interested in participating in this dissertation research, please take 15-20 minutes of your valuable time to complete this survey by clicking on the following link,

http://www.zoomerang.com/survey.zgi?p=WEB225Q9WRX6U5

or copy and paste it into your browser.

Please feel free to contact me, should you have any questions regarding this survey. Thank you very much for helping with this important study!!!

Sincerely,

There’s two ways to do it…

One, you can send directly over the HEDIR at hedir-L@siu.edu (you must be an active member to send it over the HEDIR…if not, I can do it for you).  This would include the website.

The other option would be to download the spreadsheet from www.hedir.org/directory  It’s in excel.  This has over 2,000 people (probably closer to 2500).  Everybody who signs up fro the HEDIR is put on the list.  If they drop (and they don’t request it) they are still kept on that spreadsheet.  You would have to send those individually since not everybody on that list is on the hedir.

Dear Dr. Kittleson,

After discussing with Dr. Goodson and Dr. Eddy and contacting with several HE organizations, we realize that it’s difficult to acquire health educators’ e-mail lists. For example, AAHE can only provide health educators’ mailing list. So, Dr. Goodson would like me to ask you if we can use HEDIR to invite health educators to participate in our web-based survey by providing the URL link of our web-based survey. If so, could you please tell us that how many people are registered to receive HEDIR? Knowing the numbers of people are in HEDIR can help us to estimate the response rate of our web-based survey. Thank you very much!! Have a great day!

Dear Dr. Kittleson,

How are you doing? My name is Lei-Shih Chen. I am a doctoral student at Texas A&M University.

I attended your classes before when Dr. Eddy invited you to teach his class and video-taped it in college station.

I hope you like college station.

In my dissertation proposal, I would like to conduct a web-based survey and health educators are my intended participants.

I am wondering if I can use HEDIR to announce that every health educator may receive my web-based survey in the near future. As you know, the response rate of web-base survey is low since sometimes people get lots of junk e-mail everyday and they can’t trust it. Please let me know if I can announce my web-based survey in your HEDIR. If I can, that will be wonderful. I believe that HEDIR is a great place for health educators to communicate with each other!

Thanks a lot.

Have a nice day!

Hello HEDIRs!

Does anyone know of the link (URL) to the National College Health Risk Behavior Survey (NCHRBS) created by the CDC? The links to the YRBSS are easily accessible, but not so the NCHRBS.

Or, does anyone know where to find the NCHRBS?

Thank you all in advance for your assistance.

Dear Colleagues,

One of my departments is building a master's degree in health promotion.

One of the courses they are developing is called "Organization and Administration in Health Promotion and Kinesiology." The faculty are looking for a graduate level book that could be used for such a class.

If anyone can send the name of books that would be appropriate, it would be much appreciated. Thanks.
