Hello,

=20

We are beginning to require comprehensive exams for our MPH graduates, and wanted to see if there are some "norms" for how they are being implemented in other universities. Through discussion with faculty we have discovered that we have had quite varied experiences with exams having been everything from multiple choice, short answer, to essays and case studies that have to include references; some take home, open book, others in a monitored situation. The time commitment to complete the exams also seems to vary from 1 to 4 or even 8 hours given for students to complete the exams. =20

=20

If your program requires comprehensive exams, I would appreciate you sharing the format, time length and even example questions. Please reply directly to me. If many people are interested, I will summarize the responses and send to the listserv.

=20

Thanks for your time and comments! Michele

Hello,

=20

We are increasingly being required by our university to provide evaluation of our graduates other than classroom performance and internship/job placement. In addition, we are in a college of health, where most, if not all, of the other programs have required accreditations, and/or required certifications for their graduates.

These programs are then able to use pass rates as an indicator of their success, especially compared to state or national norms. =20

=20

I know CHES is a very controversial topic on this listserv, however, we are wondering if any universities require or have considered requiring CHES for their undergraduate or graduate students. If so, I would appreciate you sharing your experiences with this.

Thanks! Michele

Good morning everyone,

I am curious to see if anyone has a typed version the new CHES competencies (82). We have the old ones printed (from NCHEC and in the appendix of Cottrell, Girvan, and McKenzie's Principles and Foundations of HP and HE text, as well as A Competency-Based Framework for Health Educators 2006). If so, would you be so kind to share them?

Thank you, HEDIR members.

Truman University requires all of their students to take the CHES exam. I think they were listed as one of the top 10 schools for pass rates in the CHES bulletin. Talk to Carolyn Cox at Truman.

Thanks!

I hate to admit this but I am a Program Coordinator of a Health Science Program which has 115 majors with only two tenure track faculty. We are trying to convince the Dean to give us another line for an additional faculty. Does anyone know of a "good" student/faculty ratio? Or other compelling evidence that we could use? We are at the point where we can't teach courses because of the sheer numbers but the "numbers" have not been convincing enough yet. Any help would be appreciated.
