Hi again HEDIRs,

Speaking of sin tax...if anyone has any information on VENDING MACHINE changes, suggestions, talking to vendors, which vendors are making or offering healthier choices, what information (or resources) are available for the business professionals in charge of the vending machine vendor relationships (so they know what/how to say/request changes). And so on..

If you are unfamiliar with this area, I know that some schools, worksites or communities are doing things like:

- only offering diet soda, juice (100%), and water

- putting a higher cost on higher sugar/fat choices (i.e. candy bars)

and lower costs on lower sugar/fat choices (e.g. popcorn, pretzels, etc.)

Any further information (resources, websites) would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Deb

There were some questions on what I meant by "point system". Some companies are giving points for preventive health activities, or participating in health education or wellness programs.

For example, you get XX points for getting your annual physical, XX points for your dental visit, XX points for going to a health class (healthy cooking, stress management, etc.), XX points for participating in regular exercise, and so on.

With those points, you build up to what Margo Harris was talking about - something like a bronze, silver and gold standards.....and then depending on that standard, you either get prizes/rewards, or get discounts on your health insurance premium, or something.

So, I am looking for ACTUAL examples, ACTUAL point systems in place, and so on, as reference.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

And as Mark suggested, please post to the group. :)

Thanks

Deb

Vending machine changes are part of our program. We always had a mix in the "Coke" machine, i.e. water, juice, etc. We increased the number of "healthy" choices and reduced the number of carbonated choices.

In the snack/candy vending machine, there is now a two-layer upper tier of "healthy" choices. Power Bar is one, a granola bar is another. I'll check in and find out vendor and check on the full range of choices and seek any data on actually purchasing of the "new" choices.

To be honest, the vending machines in our floor (recall we are all health department employees as compared to other county employee groups) are "underpatronized" in the words of the vendor. Many of us "brown bag" it, bring in our own water bottles (cheaper), and prefer to select our own snack of choice - fresh fruit, than select what is offered in the vending machines. Several times a year the vendor suggests it might make sense to remove our vending machines!! We buy a little bit more, and they quiet down. Margo
