Community Health / Health Promotion

Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) / Conversion (ABD)

· Available for the Academic Year: 2007/2008

· Salary is dependent upon academic preparation and

professional experience. In some circumstances, exceptional faculty at

higher ranks may be considered.

· Instructional Level: Undergraduate and Graduate

· The University offers a unique Retention, Tenure and

Promotion (RTP) process in which most probationary faculty members are

awarded tenure. First year faculty members work with mentors to develop

individual written probationary plans that guide their growth in

teaching, scholarly work, and service throughout the probationary

period. The university's RTP review process is exceptional in its

fairness, openness, and objectivity, focusing at all levels on whether

the specific requirements of the individual faculty member's

probationary plan have been satisfied.

The Department of Health Science seeks a faculty member who desires to

make a real difference, both in the Department and in the larger

community. Health Science is housed in the College of Health and Human

Services, which offers professional programs in eight disciplines, each

focusing on experiential learning, interdisciplinary education,

research, interaction with the regional community, and service.

Specific Position Characteristics: The successful candidate will teach

undergraduate courses in Health Science and graduate courses in the MPH

Program. Graduate teaching and advisement will include student projects

and theses in the area of Health Promotion. Undergraduate teaching and

advisement will focus on the Community Health option. Specific

assignments will depend on department needs. Workload is 15 Weighted

Teaching Units (WTUs) per semester, generally comprised of 12 WTUs of

instruction and 3 WTUs of non-instructional responsibilities. In the

first year, the College typically reduces the teaching load by 3 or more

WTUs per semester to allow new faculty extra start-up time for teaching,

scholarly work, research, and other professional development efforts. As

faculty members progress through their careers, university statistics

show that the average instructional load is closer to 9 WTUs per

semester, as opposed to the formal expectation of 12, usually through

assigned time funded by external grants. The successful candidate may be

called upon to teach in a distance education mode and will be encouraged

to develop web-enhanced and/or web-based instruction. Outcomes

assessment and service learning are important components of the

university curriculum. The successful candidate will be expected to work

cooperatively with faculty and staff in the department and college.

Qualifications: Academic Preparation: An earned doctorate in Public

Health, Health Promotion, Health Education, Health Science, or related

area is required for appointment to a tenure track position. Candidates

with a Master's degree in Public Health and CHES certified are desired.

Candidates nearing completion of the doctorate (ABD) may be considered

for a lectureship (temporary position) with the possibility of

conversion to tenure track upon completion of the doctorate.

Teaching or Other Professional Experience: Experience working with

community agencies and supervising undergraduate and graduate students

in fieldwork assignments is preferred. Candidates are expected to

demonstrate a commitment to, or potential for, teaching excellence and

scholarly activity at the university level. It is required that

candidates demonstrate a history of, or potential for, developing grant

proposals and attracting external funding. Candidates who can

demonstrate active participation or leadership roles in the American

Public Health Association, American Association of Health Education, or

other relevant organizations and exhibit a history of leadership and

professional contributions to the field of community health/health

promotion are also preferred. The successful candidate must have the

ability to work effectively with faculty, staff and students from

diverse ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
