Karen and Michael,

Yes, I did get a response from NCHEC leadership.  This response indicated the policy for having CHES, upon retirement and following the decision not to maintain full certification, use ret. following their names intends to be a positive way of giving some financial and CE effort relief to previously active professional health educators.  There is no intent to diminish CHES who have retired.  It is merely a means of distinguishing between those who are actively maintaining their credential by completing the CE requirements.

While the explanation by the NCHEC leadership seems pragmatic, it does not remove the displeasure of some colleagues who perceive this requirement as creating a lesser status for retired CHES.  It has been suggested to me that some would prefer to not list CHES at all if they are required to use the ret. abbreviation following it.  The number who have expressed concern about this issue is very small, but it is an issue NCHEC leadership needs to review periodically.

FOCUS: DISTANCE EDUCATION MODELS AND OUTCOMES

=20

In recent years, there has been a proliferation of distance education

(DE) programs designed to meet the educational needs of time-bound and location-bound students. Many of these DE programs have been successful in meeting the needs of students and have yielded successful outcomes for students, academic departments, universities, and professions. Yet, the need for additional distance education programs in health education is substantial, and many university-based academic departments of health education are interested in developing DE programs to meet this need.=20

=20

The purpose of this supplemental issue of IEJHE is to publish manuscripts that outline the procedures and processes used by health educators to design, implement, and evaluate successful distance education courses and programs in health education. It is anticipated that each manuscript will include quantitative and/or qualitative data to support program success. Each manuscript should clearly outline the program design, marketing, and evaluation processes used to yield program success. This supplemental issue is designed to provide potential program developers with a series of "practice-based evidence"

examples to serve as best process examples. Guest Editors for this issue are Beth Chaney, PhD., CHES, J. Don Chaney, PhD, CHES and Thomas O'Rourke, PhD, MPH
