Hello Dear Friends & Colleagues,
It is with deep sorrow that I inform you that Dick Schlaadt passed away on Saturday, January 6, 2007 after a year long battle with cancer. He passed away at his home in Eugene surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife Jan and four children: Kathy, Phil, Mike & Steve. I have information for you regarding arrangements that I hope you will pass on to those he would have wanted to know. If any of you know how to forward this or call Len Tritsch, Maxine Rowan, Maxine Thomas, Del Smith, Jane Gooding, Jim Girvan, Becky Sisley, Lois Pye-Petersen, Alex Petersen, Marian Forsythe, Lois Youngen, Joan Sullivan-Morris and Robert Michael that would be greatly appreciated. I have been racking my brain to think of those who need to be notified......PLEASE HELP..... if you think of others. Thanks!!
Visitation will be at Musgrove Family Mortuary on Wednesday, January 10th from 5-7, followed by a Rosary at 7:00 pm. 1152 Olive Street Eugene Or 97405 (11th & Olive St.)
There will also be a viewing in Portland at Mt. Scott Mortuary on Thursday, January 11th from 5-7. I do not have that address.
A family private entombment will take place on Friday, January 12th at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.
A memorial mass is planned for Saturday, January 13 at 12:30 at St.
Mary's Catholic Church in Eugene. After this service, attendees will move to a large hall to share our memories of our beloved friend. St. Mary's Catholic church is located at 1062 Charnelton Eugene OR 97405. It is on the corner of 11th Street and Charnelton.
Contributions may be made to: Eugene Southtowne Rotary Foundation - Richard Schlaadt. The Southtowne Rotary is establishing a Richard Schlaadt Scholarship
Dick's home address is: 3304 Wilmington Court Eugene OR 97408 for those of you that will be sending sympathy cards or contributions.
I'll be working on having an article on Dick for the OAHPERD Journal. The Executive Director of OAHPERD will be sending out an email notice of Dick's arrangements to OAHPERD members and will also forward that on to NWD AHPERD Executive Director to get that information out as well. I will also be getting hold of Becky Smith at AAHE so she can get out a notice as well. (Actually, Randy....would you please do this)
Here is most of the announcement that will be in the Eugene Register Guard Newspaper:
Dick was born on April 28, 1935 in Portland, Oregon. He married Janice Ray on February 16, 1963 and she was the love of his life and best friend for 42 years. They have four children, Mike, Phil, Kathy, and Steve, a daughter-in-law, Suzy and two granddaughters, Kayla and Lauren.
Dick attended Lents Grade School and graduated from Franklin High School in 1953 where he lettered in football, basketball and baseball. He received a four-year scholarship to Lewis and Clark College and was a four-year varsity letterman. He graduated from Lewis & Clark College in 1957 with a B.S. in Health and Physical Education. Dick received his Masters in Health Education from the University of Illinois in 1958, completing the program in less than a year. Dick served six months of active duty in the U.S. Army and six years in the Reserves. From 1959 to 1964, he fulfilled the requirements of Oregon's Standard Teaching Certificate in Health and Physical Education, the Secondary School Principal's Certificate , and Supervisor of Health and Physical Education Certificate. He did this while teaching and coaching freshmen baseball and basketball at Centennial High School. Dick received his Doctorate in Education from Oregon State Uni versity in 1965.
During his 30 years as a professor at the University of Oregon, Dick made many contributions to health education. Throughout his career, he served on state, district and national Alliance boards and committees, as well as committees for professional enhancement. Dick was President of OAHPERD, NWD AHPERD, and AAHE. He served as Department Head for School and Community Health at the U of O for 12 years and during this time the department was recognized among the top five programs in the country for preparation of health educators. He then developed and was the Director of Substance Abuse Prevention Program which received national attention. He also developed and served as Director of DEPOT (Drug Education Program for Oregon Teachers). Dick has received numerous awards including Outstanding Contributions to Health Education, Professional Service Award and Outstanding Oregon Nd Northwest College Educator, to name just a few. He was t he author of over 50 professional jou rnal articles and seven books, one of which is in its fourth edition.
Since his retirement in 1997, Dick has enjoyed travelling with his wife, Jan, spending time with family and friends and staying at his homes in Sunriver and Palm Desert. He was a member of the Southtowne Rotary and spent time volunteering at the school where his daughter teaches third grade.
Dick's family is very proud of him and feel fortunate to have had such a wonderful husband, father, and friend. Family, friends & colleagues will all miss his great sense of humor, kind heart and gentle spirit.

The American Association for Health Education is a partner organization of the Inter-American Summit on Conflict Resolution Education to be held March 14-17, 2007 in Cleveland Ohio. The focus of the summit is the

Global Issues Resource Center, Office of Community Continuing Education at Cuyahoga Community College and The Organization of American States will host a four-day Inter-American Summit on Conflict Resolution Education in Cleveland, Ohio, USA. This event will bring together government representatives from among the 50 states and 34 countries of the Americas and their non-governmental organization partners who have legislation or policies in place to deliver conflict resolution education at the K-12 level and in colleges of teacher education.

This first-ever Summit offers a dynamic opportunity to develop a hemispheric infrastructure throughout the Americas to advance the work in the fields of conflict resolution education and peace education. The Summit will bring together policymakers and educators representing regions across the United States and select member countries of the OAS representing North, Central, South America and the Caribbean. These national and international educators will exchange program best practices, evaluation methodology, creation of policy implementation structures, and consideration of obstacles to success. This event offers a needed opportunity for college students, college faculty, university scholars, K-12 educators, public health officials, prevention specialists, and state, local, and national policy makers in the Americas and beyond to convene in one location to learn more about the most current work being undertaken.=20

AAHE/NCATE University Preparation Workshop
Will your institution be seeking NCATE approval for your school health education program?
Are you one of the institutions scheduled for an NCATE review in 2008 or 2009?
If you answered yes to either of these questions your department needs to attend the AAHE/NCATE University Preparation Workshop in Baltimore.
This workshop is geared for institutions offering school health education programs that will need to prepare a program report as a part of an upcoming institutional NCATE review. We are pleased to offer this workshop in conjunction with the 2007 AAHE/AAHPERD Annual Convention which will be held in Baltimore, Maryland March 13 - 17, 2007.

Who should attend: Department Chairs or program coordinators and school health education faculty
