Apologies for the long post, but how could I mention just one...or two.

Actually, when I was considering graduate school, I was choosing between Public Health and Information/Library Science. I took a librarian "wannabe"

into public health.

I am privileged to work for our state's immunization registry. When we shuffled floors two years ago, a book discussion group moved into our midst.

Life hasn't been the same. Our last read was Mountains Beyond Mountains by Paul Farmer. Billie is right; it is a great read, and even better group discussion book. You will hear diverse opinions/ideas about Farmer and why he does what he does, not to mention what he does and how he does it. Our next read is a "classic," The Spirit Catches You and You Fall Down by Anne Fadiman. For many it is a "re-read." A more academic handling of the culture, communication, practice - and great read is Explaining Illness:

Research, Theory, and Strategies by Bryan Whaley ed. If you are going down the cultural competence track, I have to mention to online "great reads"

from Seattle,

* Cross Cultural Healthcare Program - http://www.xculture.org/

* Ethnomed - http://www.xculture.org/

I am also fascinated by what some publishers now refer to as the "best medical literature of our time." My first great read in that genre was Sherwin Nuland's How We Die: Reflections on Life's Final Chapter. Published in 1993, it was unanimously selected as a National Book Award Winner. I just finished a reprise of Nuland's insights when I read, Final Exam: A Surgeon's Reflections on Mortality. Dr. Pauline Chen is the surgeon/author of this book, and you will not be able to put it down.

My "Best Book" of 2007 (so far) is the astonishing book by Barron Lerner, MD, When Illness Goes Public: Celebrity Patients and How We Look At Medicine. If you have been in health education for a while, you will recognize a timeline of celebrities who became ill or "ordinary" people who became celebrities because of illness. From Lou Gehrig to John Foster Dulles to Barney Clark to Lorenzo Odone (Lorenzo's Oil), you will review and recall how these stories played in the media or were played to the media.

Lerner's storytelling style is engaging, and you will stay up late to read this book. The book was reviewed in the New England Journal of Medicine in April 2007 - http://content.nejm.org/cgi/content/extract/356/17/1793. Any health education/health promotion professional or student would find this a fascinating and compelling book.

Happy reading this summer and all year long. Margo
