Paraphrasing a bit the words but not the spirit of what MA representative to the Continental Congress John Adams said of John Dickinson in the movie/play "1776" after the hard-fought vote on independence against which Dickinson lead the opposition and with whom Adams clearly disagreed from time to time, but held in the highest of esteem for his honor, intelligence, and

commitment:

John Adams rises from his seat, taps him walking stick/cane smartly on the floor a few times and announces:

Ladies and Gentlemen, I say you, 'Bill Cissel'". And every single

representative jumped up and began tapping their canes repeatedly and increasingly loudly on the floor.

That great tremor you just felt were the canes tapping all around the world in salute to our one and only Bill Cissell.

Here's to joy in whatever lies ahead, Bill.

Today, faculty, students and friends held a party to celebrate the retirement of Dr. Don Ciulla and me from the Department of Health Studies, Texas Woman's University. Under the leadership of Dr. Jody Oomen-Early, several faculty members, staff members and students compiled a book of letters, poems, tall tales and statements, some of which included some Texas-style embellishments. Also, included were letters and statements wishing me well in my reirement from colleagues and former students from across the country and around the world. Even the letters of support for the Conaro Award nomination, an award I received on April 19, were included

In this age of high tech communications, some of the contributors acknowledged they had not personally been a student, a fellow faculty member, or even met me face-to-face. They had gotten to know me through HEDIR. Mark Kittleson must take some pride in the fact some subscribers to HEDIR have had a major impact on the career paths and accomplishments of other subscribers. At least, this is what has been communicated to me.

Given the volume of contributions by many of you, it will take a while for me to get around to thanking you directly for the kind thoughts and encouraging recommendations. The submissions were probably screened by colleagues compiling this book of memories in that no really embarrassing tales were included and none of my enemies or serious critics are represented. I thank all who contributed to this collection of uplifting documents. I am sure that I will visit it frequently as I listen to the theme music from Lonesome Dove and watch the glorious Texas sunset, or maybe a sunset viewed in Abu Dhabi or Dubai.

Gratefully,

Bill Cissell, Ph.D., MSPH, CHES
