Mike or Ms. Loretta,

This is certainly a surprising announcement. Given that it is from your email address, I will treat it as a serious, legitimate announcement. Best wishes in you change of gender identity! Do you plan to continue living in the New Orleans area? Will you continue to operate your martial arts school?

HEDIRs,

Michael was spoofing with the gender change announcement. I was somewhat skeptical, but I wanted to be sensitive to nay potential for offense if he were serious. He caught me, and I acknowledge his joke worked in my case.

When Michael posted the spoof about changing his gender identity from Mike to Loretta, I thought it too insensitve as a joke to be posted on a list service of the size of HEDIR. Thus, I tumbled to it being sincere.

As Michael suggests, it is something that people who know Micheal as well as I do should not have bought. If he had sent it to only a few close friends, I would have seen it for what it is. However, I asume that there may be several subscribers to HEDIR, who may be transgender or have close friends who are transgender and view it as insensitive. Is my thinking too politically corect?

Bill:

I did not see the original message but I do not think people should be "joking" about gender issues in a public forum like this.

What does this say about his respect for cultural competency that is so important for our field.

Just something to think about on Memorial Day.

In health,

Michael

It's my first time posting on the listserve, but I felt compelled after reading these posts. Although I do not have any friends/family who fall into that transgender category I do have to say that I felt the post was inappropriate to be sent out to once I realized it was meant as a joke. I doubt that I will ever be one of those who "unsubcribe" to the listserve because as a new(er) member of the health education profession I have greatly benefitted from some of the discussiosn. However, I can see how these type of discussions should be sent only to those who know the individual personally and can appreciate this type of humor. Just putting in my two cents worth!
