Hello Suzy,

If you are looking for a book that can be used in a middle/high school or even college health classroom, I would recommend Tools for Teaching Health, Jossey Bass Publishers, March 2007.

Let me say that I am prejudiced towards this book, since I am one of the authors, along with Sal Chiariello and Dr. Shannon Whalen from Springfield College. It is not a traditional textbook, but rather a compilation of lessons focusing on the CDC's Six Risk Behaviors of Adolescents.

All lessons reference the National Health Education Standards and are interactive and skills-based. It is a good reference for the experienced teacher looking for new ideas and is perfect for health education majors and those student teaching. Contact the publisher at www.josseybass.com

If you are a Higher Education person, Professors can order a preview copy by calling

1-800 956 7739.

Good luck

Folks,

I need some help. Our local high school is thinking of putting together a proposal to offer an 'advanced' health course for high school seniors (currently the only health course is a 9th grade, one semester course).

It's unsure of what exactly they are looking for, but they want something that is NCAA eligible (don't quite know what that means), and something that might be able to be used between various disciplines (i.e., science). I know of one high school in Michigan that put together an "Epidemiology"

course for seniors.it was basically an advanced health but it had enough epi in it to have it count as an elective in science/biology (unfortunately I have misplaced information that I had about this course).

My request for help is as follows: If you have been involved in the creation of an advanced health course (or if you know of one at a local high school), could you send me whatever information you have to help steer this committee in the right direction.

I thank you.
