/Hello Everyone, You've got questions... we've got answers.. :-)
Confused about the difference between a listserv and a forum?/
*A forum, aka, discussion board / bulletin board, is Web-based. *
/You go to the site: (
http://forums.hpcareer.net) to post a question, read what others have posted and add your own thoughts. You can search through previous years of posts in a variety of ways to look for answers to an question you might have./*A ListServ is email based. *
/You subscribe to list, then every email sent to the list, goes to everyone who is subscribed. The benefit is you never forget to go look, like you might with a web-based forum. The downside is you tend to get a mountain of email that may or may not interest you and the only way to stop it is to unsubscribe, or subscribe to the digest, which gives you one really, really long email daily. /
/
I think once you get used to visiting the site daily, it will become a much more desirable way to communicate since it is quite flexible, allowing users to subscribe to topics/discussions of interest or create bookmarks. /
/Ultimately for the forums to succeed there must be activity and lots of users. Our forums are for professionals & students in health promotion related fields. /
*What is the difference between bookmarking and subscribing?*
Bookmarking is much like bookmarking in your web browser. You aren't alerted when there's an update, but you can come back to the topic later. Subscribing, however, will notify you when there is an update to the topic or forum on the board via your preferred method or methods.
Subscribing to specific forums or topics: To subscribe to a specific forum, click the "Subscribe forum" link upon entering the forum. To subscribe to a topic, reply to the topic with the subscribe checkbox checked or click the "Subscribe topic" link within the topic itself.
Getting connected to usergroups: Once you've setup your profile, be sure to send a PM (private message) to Mark to ask to be added to the HEDIR usergroup. Other user groups that may be of interest in are:
*
Health Education Faculty
*
Department Chairs
*
Hospital Based Health Promotion
*
And various alumni groups
We are happy to create user groups for your alumni or other special interest groups. Let us know if you have an idea. Groups can be open to everyone or only by requesting to join or closed and can even be hidden from view by anyone who is not a member.
