CALL OR EMAIL YOUR REPRSENTATIVE AND ASK THEM TO OVERRIDE THE NOVEMBER 13TH BUSH VETO OF THE FISCAL YEAR 2008 LABOR, HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES, AND EDUCATION APPROPRIATIONS BILL, WHICH INCLUDES A FUNDING INCREASE FOR THE DIVISION OF NUTRITION AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITY AND OBESITY AND THE PREVENTION BLOCK GRANT! =20
Because President Bush vetoed the bill, the House will vote to override the veto this afternoon. Be sure to contact your Representative as soon as possible to urge them to overturn the veto. Failure to override the veto will very likely result in a decrease to these programs and others.
President Bush recommended level funding for the DNPAO and zero funding for the Prevention Health and Human Services Block Grant. If you need to find out the name of your elected representative go to
http://member.aahperd.org/advocacy/ - click on "Elected Officials" and type in your zip code - direct emails will appear for your representative. US Capitol Switchboard, 202-224-3121=20
On November 13th, President Bush vetoed the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education conference report, which includes a $1.6 million increase for the Division of Nutrition and Physical Activity and Obesity
(DNPAO) and a $5 million funding increase for the Prevention Health and Human Services Block Grant because it included more funding than his budget request. Earlier in November the House passed the bill by a vote of 269-142; the Senate passed an amended bill by a vote of 56-37; and then the House voted again on the amended bill 274-141. Thank you to everyone that called their House and Senate Members of Congress to urge them to vote in favor of the bill.=20
Contacting a Congressional Office
=20
1. The US Capitol Switchboard, 202-224-3121, can connect you with your
Representative. It is best to call the Washington Office, not the local district office. If you don't know who your Representative is, you can go online to
www.house.gov. =202. Ask to speak with the staff person who handles the Health and Human
Services Appropriations for the office. The purpose is to ask that
their boss vote to override the President's veto of the Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations report. If you can't reach the staffer, leave a message.
3. When you reach the staffer, very briefly identify your professional
affiliation and reason for supporting the legislation. =20

Talking Points
* I am contacting you to ask that the Congressman/woman overturn
the President's veto of the Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations bill for FY 2008.=20
* The bill includes a $1.6 million increase for the Division of
Nutrition and Physical Activity and Obesity (DNPAO) and a $5 million funding increase for the Prevention Health and Human Services Block Grant.
* Briefly tell them what this funding means to you and your state.
=20
Why your call is critical
=20
The more Members of Congress that hear from their constituents about the importance of this funding the more likely they will be to override the veto. If Congress cannot overturn the veto, funding increases for these programs and others will be uncertain.
