New Resource:

I found this policy brief to be an excellent summary of the why's and how's. Great primer for professionals and students. Enjoy.

Communicating for Policy Change

Health foundations have traditionally overlooked communications as an essential tool for achieving strategic goals and, instead, have preferred to engage in “FYI” communications such as issuing annual reports, newsletters, and press releases on foundation grants. As this GIH Issue Brief Communicating for Policy Change reports, this attitude has evolved into one where more and more grantmakers recognize the importance of communications in their own work, specifically efforts to influence health policy.

Twenty generations before us have ensured they left a better life for their children, but there's a very real risk that we could be the first generation to fail to do the same. Making sure we do not fail is the great moral test of our generation. But it's up to you to choose what we need to do it – all I can do is tell you what I will do. I will tell you the truth, the hard truth, the whole truth. I will fight for you like I have fought for people like you my entire life. And together, we are going to win." John Edwards 2008

CDC is pleased to announce the availability of datasets that may be of interest to researchers, graduate students, and others working in the fields of school health, public health, adolescent health, and public policy.

CDC recently released the results of the 2006 School Health Policies and Programs Study (SHPPS). SHPPS 2006 is the largest and most comprehensive assessment of school health programs ever conducted. For more information, go to www.cdc.gov/shpps. =20

SHPPS public-use data files and technical documentation are available on the site. These files are available for download and can be used for secondary analyses without cost. The data files are located at http://www.cdc.gov/HealthyYouth/shpps/2006/data/index.htm.

CDC also maintains the Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System (YRBSS).

The YRBSS is a national survey conducted biennially to monitor priority health risk behaviors that contribute to the leading causes of death, disability, and social problems among youth and adults in the United States. For more information, go to www.cdc.gov/yrbss.=20

YRBSS public-use data files and technical documentation are also available for download and can be used for secondary analyses without cost. The data files are located at http://www.cdc.gov/HealthyYouth/yrbs/data/index.htm.
