HEDIR Colleagues..the following is from Dr. Riegelman...just an FYI.

Dear All,

Since next week is Public Health Week, I thought this would be a good time to update you on some national efforts that are underway to encourage undergraduate public health education.

=E2=97=8F Dr. Julie Gerberding, Director of CDC, has just taped a = Podcast endorsing and encouraging undergraduate public health education. The Podcast is available at  http://www2a.cdc.gov/podcasts/

=E2=97=8F The Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) = is becoming increasingly involved in undergraduate public health education as part of the  Educated Citizen and Public Health Initiative.  AAC&U has put together the attached summary of national efforts to encourage this initiative.

=E2=97=8F The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) has just published a theme issue on Population Health in its journal Academic Medicine. An article entitled: Evidence-Based Public Health as Preparation for Medical School is attached. It is a featured article offered free on the AAMC website so it can be freely distributed.

=E2=97=8F The Institute of Medicine of the National Academies has = approved a =E2=80=9CRoundtable=E2=80=9D on undergraduate public health. The = Roundtable is expected to conduct a series of Workshops to examine what needs to be done to complete implementation of the IOM recommendation that =E2=80=9C=E2= =80=A6all undergraduate should have access to education in public health.=E2=80=9D = The Roundtable will include representations from public health and arts and sciences organizations.

=E2=97=8F Please check out version 2.0 of the Undergraduate Public = Health Curriculum Guide and give us feedback using the web based forms. It=E2=80=99= s available at www.teachpublichealth.org and at www.aacu.org (under Science and Health). Your comments on what is included and what is missing are key to developing version 3.0.

As you can see the national initiative is moving ahead. I hope that you will participate in and publicize many of these efforts. Please let me know at www.sphrkr@gwumc.edu if you have questions or suggestions.

All the best

Richard Riegelman MD, PhD
