Recently, I was speaking with a colleague who has a public health background.  We were discussing some research that shows that social factors may be as important or likely more important determinants of health than individual behaviors or lifestyle.

He wanted to know what health educators are doing to influence these social determinants of health.  Personally, I talk about these factors in my classes, but I can't say I have been involved in any programs that directly address these determinants.  Other than supporting advocacy efforts, what would you tell my friend?

Below are some of the most discussed social determinants; this list is from the Canadian Health Service (Raphael, 2003(2); Policy Options):

- ethnic/cultural status

- gender

- fair employment and working conditions

- balanced distribution of income

- social exclusion and gradient

- early life care

- education and literacy

- employment and income security

- food security

- housing security

- access to health care

Hi,

I am in Tampa and not near my home computer and email messages.  A few days ago someone gave information about bachelors programs in public health.  Could someone please send that information to me directly?

Thank you,

Laurie Schott
