Project Description:

 

Preventing Recurrence of Thromboembolic Events through Coordinated Treatment in the District of Columbia (PROTECT DC) is an NIH-funded research project that is part of the larger Stroke Disparities Program.  PROTECT DC is a randomized phase II clinical trial of the PROTECT DC intervention (hospital-based initiation of aggressive secondary prevention combined with navigator case management) vs.

standard management in ischemic stroke patients from two underserved hospitals in the District of Columbia. 

 

Position Description:  

 

The Research Navigator will carry out a variety of duties primarily under the supervision of the Clinical Research Coordinator.  The incumbent will provide education to stroke patients during their in-hospital stay as well as in the community setting.  The navigator serves to assist stroke patients with community-based, health related, services and resources.  The navigator will work with staff in multiple

disciplines: social work, neurology, physical/occupational/speech therapists, educators and researchers in order to provide services to participants.

Furthermore, the navigator will serve as a link between patients, health providers, and primary care physicians. 

 

Main Responsibilities

 

1.    Orient participant to the PROTECT DC program

2.    Interact with participant  via phone calls and home visits  prior to and

after discharge

3.    Provide education to participants regarding stroke and behavior

modifications to reduce the risk of another stroke

4.    Monitor patient progress toward program goals and assist the patient in

accessing appropriate community resources

5.    Review continued care plan with study team and address participants’

follow-up with referrals to community resources

6.    Other duties as required

 

Qualifications:

Associate Degree or Some college level education Previous work/volunter experience with a community based/grassroots type organization Interest in research and health education highly desired Ability to work well independently and as part of a team Has familiarity with the DC area Needs be comfortable with traveling to the homes of patients and following procedures to ensure his or her personal security

 

The Research Navigator must be organized and detail-oriented when performing duties, while friendly, flexible, and outgoing when interfacing with patients, families, and hospital staff.  In addition, the Research Navigator must possess the ability to communicate professionally and clearly and to establish strong collaborative relationships and work with others in a cooperative and effective manner.  Candidates must have proficiency in use of PC and demonstrated knowledge of PC software programs including Windows, MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc), Internet, and e-mail.

 

This position is ideal for someone interested in gaining experience and participating in a clinical research trial that involves working with hospital staff, patients, and families towards the larger goal of improving stroke care for the underserved population of the District of Columbia.
