Are you interested in publishing a manuscript in the Society for Public Health Education (SOPHE) Journal, Health Promotion Practice, about work that you have done or are doing in a health care setting? Specifically, the Associate Editors for the "Health Education in Health care Settings"
section need an April 21, 2008 submission. We propose to solicit abstracts for manuscripts and to contact the selected author or team of authors by February 27, 2008. We will work closely with the authors and expect that the manuscript will be ready for submission by April 21st.
We have recently concluded a three- part series on the evolving role that Health Educators play in the reduction of medical errors in the health care setting and, in the past, have included manuscripts on the development of patient education tool, the management of patient education services in multi-site settings, and interviews with pioneers in the field. Please feel free to contact us by phone or email if you have any questions or would like to discuss your proposed manuscript.
This is a real opportunity to share your practice with others.
Thanks for your consideration.

Subject: Know Your Health Behavior Change Theory?

You've been hired by a large energy company to help reduce risks and lower system utilization. Safety (getting enough sleep/stress reduction so the employee stays awake, not running over anybody with that $44 million machine), back injury prevention, smoking, and weight management have been determined (via your excellent HRA, utilization data, etc.) as your first year's focus.
You have access to any and all kinds of media. Your company is spread out in 12 different locations around the state so you decide to use television and radio (if you can close your eyes and know what is going on, it's radio!). How are you going to get them to change a behavior (the limits of TV; i.e., visit a car dealership; buy a salad dressing; visit our fast food restaurant when hungry even though the competitors are right down the block, etc.)? Remembering the Knowledge does NOT change behavior, WHICH THEORY will go into your plan?
I have posted an example of how Madison Avenue collects theory-based data (via a focus group) and, then, creatively, uses it to sell the product they've been hired to sell. Which theory is used to generate the kinds of data you want out of your time-consuming and expensive focus groups.
Wait a minute, you just ask questions? Your focus group activity is not theory based? Hmmmmmmmmmmm. Maybe that's why Madison Avenue sells and sells successfully, and we struggle, for example, to get folks in for a flu shot!
(Didn't get this stuff in your Social Marketing class! Shame on the
instructor!)
