Michael, I loved your last post. Very entertaining. It made me think of a question for all of you..

So, to all on the HEDIR..

I am curious to get your take/feedback on the the whole 'knowledge does not change behavior.'

When I have brought this up in the past, even to other health educators, some disagree and say that knowledge is what people need to change...for example with taking an Health Risk Assessment (HRA)...that it is necessary for people to take an HRA to know their health status and risk so they can make change. (One benefit to the popular HRAs these days is that the profile participants receive is usually full of recommendations for change, IF people are ready, interested and open to hear them!)

So, what I am looking for is - how would you respond or speak to those that don't understand that knowledge ALONE doesn't change behavior? What resources, references, web links, etc. would you use to support your discussion?

Thanks for any feedback!

Deb

COMPELLING BET NEWS SPECIAL, STIGMA: THE SILENT KILLER PREMIERES ON THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 7 AT 8:00 P.M. ET/PT TO HONOR BLACK HIV/AIDS AWARENESS DAY

The BET News Special Examines Stigma's Role in the Spread of HIV/AIDS among Blacks in the U.S. and the Caribbean

BET Networks have announced plans to air the BET News special STIGMA:

THE SILENT KILLER, a half-hour show that examines the role that stigmas have played in the spread of HIV/AIDS among people of color in both the U.S. and the Caribbean on Thursday, February 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT. This news special coincides with the nationally-observed Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (February 7), and is part of a longstanding Emmy Award-winning public education partnership with the Kaiser Family Foundation, the "BET Rap-It-Up" Campaign.=20

Examining the issue of stigma from multiple perspectives, this special news documentary explores the challenges faced by Blacks living with HIV, as well as the negative impact of stigma on prevention efforts.

The show takes a look at how some Black religious leaders have reacted to the prevalence of HIV/AIDS in their communities and the position the Black church has taken in addressing the epidemic. Additionally, the special highlights the role that media and entertainment industries have played in encouraging stigma; and also explores how stigma impacts personal relationships among families and HIV-positive individuals.=20

The show will also feature up-close and personal interviews with political and religious figures, public health experts, entertainers and people affected by HIV/AIDS, including Dr. Kevin Fenton, Director of the National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD and TB prevention; Phil Wilson, Founder and Executive Director of the Black AIDS Institute; and Ainsley Reid, CEO and Co-Founder of the Jamaican Network of People Living With HIV/AIDS. Also, BETonBlast, BET.com's broadband channel, will feature exclusive clips from the show immediately following the premiere on Thursday, February 7.

For up-to-the-minute information, footage and photos about the special, please visit our press only website www.bet.com/pr <http://www.bet.com/pr> .
