If you have experience translating the general health status question responses into Italian, could you contact me?

The study I am working on is being conducted in English, French and Italian. My question is which Italian words best capture the meaning of the response options "fair" and "poor". My PhD student is a native Italian speaker and has provided me with these options: Non male = not bad with a positive connotation, Debole = weak or not very good with a negative connotation, Cadgionevole = very weak with a strong negative

connotation, Pessima = very poor with a strong negative connotation.

We are leaning towards using non male and debole.

We are testing the survey with our target audiences in a couple of weeks. Any help prior to that is greatly appreciated.

Grazie,

Suzanne

Mark,

Thanks for your response. I also have relatives that have avoided =20 becoming "pesky" and "costly" healthy old persons. I think you are =20 right about the question being over- simplified. Not only are we =20 talking about one complex system, but the interaction of many complex =20=

systems that influence health and related costs.

Here is a link to a recent article addressing the issue of medical =20 inflation. Perhaps it does currently cost more to keep people alive =20 longer. But perhaps that is limited to our current health care =20 system. If we can address the system's flaws, as discussed in the =20 article, hmmmm...

Amy and I had this conversation offline but I want to add that I also wonder how much of the excessive healthy older adults living longer medical costs are accrued in the last 2-4 weeks of life when health fails and families consciously or unconsciously are choosing expensive medical interventions that do not prolong life with any hope of quality. The most recent deaths in my extended family involved people in their late 80s spending their last days in a hospital with machines in every orifice.

Unfortunately, I think the excessive costs associated with end of life care is really about the collapse of community and family. As a society we need to rediscover the continuum of life and embrace death and dying in our homes and not in hospital.

That, and the failure of the health care system as amy references : )

Agreed. Hospitals and medical "professionals" want to bleed families

dry. In the coming years we will need Dr. Kevorkian more than ever...

I've already got a commitment from friends that when I reach the end,

Hello Mark and others out there,

Mark, my sympathies for the loss of your family members.

My thought on the issue is that more folks need to plan for end of life

with Durable Power of Attorney for Health Care contracts and maybe a

very specialized Living Will, thought I don't like most of the forms

out there for the Living Wills because they are way too general and not

patient oriented.

My mother's death from Parkinson's disease was a good example for me

and my siblings. She died with family around her in prayer. She had

made it really clear she wanted no extraordinary care, not even a

feeding tube when she could no longer swallow. I thought she planned

well for that day and was a model to me of how to live and die. :)

Just my 2 cent's worth....

Regards,

Richard Fee, Ph.D.

group of students to complete this survey. If you are teaching any

undergraduate or graduate level courses, would you please ask your students

to consider completing the survey?

This survey is on-line at www.hedir.org/myspace It is completely anonymous

and will take about 5-10 minutes.

I thank you for your help.

Dear Colleagues

=20

I am responding to a recent HEDIR thread related to the impending =

Certified Public Health (CPH) exam.=20

=20

On December 13, 2007, the Council of Accredited MPH Programs =

http://www.mphprograms.org/ presented a web cast in which Dr. Bernard =

Goldstein, chair of the National Board of Public Health Examiners, =

(BPHE) discussed the CPH exam. Doctor Goldstein provided a PowerPoint =

overview of the rationale and purpose for the exam that you may find =

very interesting. A short question and answer period followed his =

presentation.

=20

The presentation was hosted on the Elluminate Live online platform that =

is used by the San Jose State University Master of Public Health =

Distance Education Program. Dr. Edward Mamary, the overall SJSU MPH =

Program Director and a member of the BPHE, was the host for this =

presentation.=20

=20

A recording of this presentation is available online through the URL =

link below.

=20

Instructions: Once you click on the URL and get into the Elluminate live =

Manager, click on the Council of Accredited MPH Programs link. Allow =

your browser to download the JNLP file =E2=80=93 its a Java script file =

necessary for Elluminate to open the recording. It will not harm your =

computer.=20

=20

I hope you find this presentation useful. The exam has created =

controversy in health education circles and its effect on the quality of =

public health service delivery may not be determined for a very long =

time - if ever. =20

I have proposed adding a one credit service learning course

Is anyone willing to share a sample syllabus?
