School Security Impact

=20

A recent Annenberg report on "Beating the Odds" notes that schools that had brought low-performing ninth-graders to timely graduation and college enrollment: " ...had consistently refused metal detectors or other screening devices on their campuses. What is the impact of school security measures on student and staff perceptions of the school climate? See the UCLA Center's Hot Topic on this matter at http://smhp.psych.ucla.edu/hottopic.htm=20

National Health Observances - 2008

Health observances are days, weeks, or months devoted to promoting particular health concerns. The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) of the U.S. Department of HHS provides an on line calendar that lists selected health observances at http://www.healthfinder.gov/library/nho/nho.asp

D&s=3Dhttp://www.healthfinder.gov/library/nho/nho.asp> =20

=20

The calendar lists selected health observances for 2008 in three ways:

the calendar shows days and weeks, and both the text listings and the "Year at a Glance" sheet show monthly health observances as well. Health professionals, teachers, community groups, and others can use these special times to sponsor health promotion events, stimulate awareness of health risks, or focus on disease prevention. Materials available from sponsoring organizations range from a single flyer to packets of promotional materials.
