Call for Papers - 2008 Eta Sigma Gamma Student Monograph

=20

Manuscript submission deadline is February 29, 2008.

=20

For additional information, including the Faculty Sponsor Form, please visit http://etasigmagamma.org/monograph.html.

=20

Who Can Submit Manuscripts?

Any undergraduate or graduate student who is a member in good standing of Eta Sigma Gamma can submit a manuscript for consideration. Students may submit their manuscripts individually, or two or more students may collaborate on a single manuscript.

=20

What type of Manuscripts are Appropriate?

Empirical research papers (data-based), systematic literature reviews on specific topics, theoretical pieces, case studies about aspects of program planning and/or evaluation, practical perspectives, commentaries and position papers, and other creative papers related to health promotion, health education, and health science are encouraged. Students should consider revising and submitting appropriate papers, which they have written during their professional preparation. Only original manuscripts that have not been accepted or published previously will be considered.

=20

How are Manuscripts Evaluated and Selected for Publication?

All manuscripts must meet the author guidelines (see below). Each manuscript will receive a blind review from at least three reviewers.

Selection criteria will include relevance of topic to health education, timeliness, originality, writing style and grammar, content accuracy, clarity, and economy of expression. Based on the results of the review and availability of space, the Monograph will select and publish as many manuscripts as possible.

=20

When is the Deadline for Submitting a Manuscript?

Manuscripts must be e-mailed to the Guest Editor or postmarked by February 29, 2008.

=20

To Whom Should Manuscripts be Addressed?

Submit a cover letter and a completed Faculty Sponsor Form MS WORD, with the original manuscript and three copies to Dr. Eric Buhi (see contact info below).

=20

Author Guidelines

Prepare manuscripts using the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition). Manuscripts will not be accepted if APA style is not used.

=20

Manuscripts are limited to 10 pages, excluding title pages, abstract page, and APA-style reference list.

=20

Manuscripts must type-written or printed on white 8.5" x 11" paper and double-spaced throughout, including abstract and reference list, using a 12-point serif typeface (e.g., Times Roman or Courier). Type must be laser or letter quality.  Format all page margins at 1.0". Also, do not justify lines; instead, use the "align left" style and leave the right margin uneven, or ragged. Follow the APA style for the preparation of reference citation within the text and the reference list. The reference list at the end of the manuscript must provide complete information about each entry. Also, it must include the sources that specifically support the manuscript. Make sure reference citations within the text and each citation entry in the reference list agree. Follow APA style for typeface, use of uppercase and lowercase letters, headings, quotations, tables and table titles, and figures and figure citations.

=20

Include two title pages with the manuscript. The first page must include a running head, a manuscript title, full names of all authors, year in school of student authors, institutional affiliation, ESG chapter affiliation, complete mailing addresses and telephone numbers for all authors, and list the name and telephone number of the faculty sponsor.

E-mail addresses and fax numbers for all authors should also be included. The second title page should only include the manuscript title.

=20

A 120-word abstract must accompany each manuscript.  Prepare abstracts using the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition).

=20

Number pages consecutively, beginning with the first title page as page one, followed by the second title page (page two), the abstract (page three), text, references, and visuals. Position page numbers at the top-right of each page.

=20

Your Eta Sigma Gamma chapter sponsor or another faculty member should review the manuscript for grammar, spelling, format and content, and complete the Faculty Sponsor Form MS WORD.  Include one copy of the completed Faculty Sponsor Form with your submitted manuscript.

=20

On or before February 29, 2008, submit 1) cover letter, 2) a completed Faculty Sponsor Form MS WORD, and 3) the original manuscript to Dr. Eric Buhi at ebuhi@health.usf.edu.

=20

If you do not receive a notification of receipt, please contact Dr. Eric Buhi at ebuhi@health.usf.edu.

Greetings,

I have a student who finds herself in a bind and needs to take a Community Health class before ours will be offered again in Winter of 09.

Do any of you know of an undergraduate Community Health course available on-line in which she may be able to enroll?

Thanks,

Kris

Kris,

I have posted this before but they should check out this great database:

"Imagine what it might be like in 20 years if our efforts are successful and people could once again govern themselves. A line would be carefully drawn between corporations and the state, reducing financial influence over elections and lawmaking, making possible a whole new generation of progressive elected officials committed to social transformation. Imagine that the institutions of the global economy are overhauled so that labor and environmental issues are integrated into trade policies, and impoverished nations are freed from unpayable international debts. Trade and investment rules promote fair exchange, and national governments have the policy space to support social and environmental goals at home." http://yesmagazine.org/article.asp?ID=1825

Hello, I am forwarding this message from Dr. Jody Oomen-Early at Texas Woman's University:

=20

Hi, Kris and other HEDIR subscribers,

As a reply to Kris' inquiry about an online Community Health course, I thought I'd share a little about our online program. TWU offers a bachelor's completion program in Community Health as well as a fully online Masters in Health Studies (with Community Health, Health Management, dual MLS/MS,  and Higher Education tracks). We offer upper division online courses (CHES-based) courses from a SAPBAC approved curriculum that also meets national standards for excellence in online course design (i.e. Quality Matters). If anyone needs an online course such as Community Health, Program Planning, Program Evaluation, Grant Writing, etc., you may want to check out our program. Students can register as non-degree seeking if they just need to pick up a class.

It's also one of the most affordable online options around. There is an article that has just been published in the current special edition of the International Electronic Journal of Health Education on our program outcomes. Here is the link to the article (2nd one down):

For another program you might want to try the University of Alabama's Distance Education program in Health Studies.  Great program with some very good online and video instruction!  The website is http://www.ches.ua.edu/distanceed/graduate/index.htm

As a follow up to Cathy's email (which was totally unsolicited so we

appreciate it even more) the UA Diatnce program is in it's 11th year of

offering a complete distance program, and will graduate it's 500th

student this May.  Last year the College's and Depts Outstanding Masters

Student was a distance active duty soldier stationed in Okinawa who

defended his thesis over 4 time zones and was nominated for Outstanding

Thesis for this year.
