This is your University, right, Elbert and not an across the board finding,

if I'm reading you right? True, many students start off disadvantaged and

have some trouble "catching up" but at some major institutions, I had many

students who write at the level of many of my challenged students here at

KCC. I'm not saying they're all great - as a matter of fact, I can remember

not being a brilliantly shining star throughout my academic career - but I'd

like to think I turned in to one heck of a solid practitioner and have done

pretty well as an academic, too. Grades are important, but they are just

part of the picture. But I concede your point in principles - not every

degree is awarded to an outstanding student!

V.,

I could not agree more. I know that for me it was easier to

afford community college than a 4 year school. My community

college experience also enabled me to receive scholarships to

offset the cost of a four year university that I could not afford

otherwise. The divide between the haves and have nots in the

United States continues to widen. We must also remember that the

majority of professoriate comes from the culture of the haves and

are currently in the status of the haves. This is a

qualitatively and a quantitative difference. I believe that this

is an issue that is not addressed well enough in the academic

world of multiculturalism.
