Congratulations to Mark Kittleson!

I am pleased to announce that Mark Kittleson, our SIUC colleague, and HEDIR founder and owner, has been selected as the recipient of the American Association for Health Education (AAHE) Scholar Award for 2008. The Scholar Award is presented to an individual with a scholarly record as evidenced over time by publications and presentations. The recipient must be currently producing scholarly materials in health, must provide evidence of in-depth study in health, must be a significant contributor to health education, and must be capable of communicating ideas and facts to groups with diverse memberships.

The Scholar Award will be presented at the 2008 AAHE national convention in Ft Worth in April. Mark will give his scholar presentation at the 2009 AAHE convention in Tampa, Florida.

Many of us are aware of the many contributions that Mark has made to our profession through teaching, mentoring, research and service in addition to his creativity, vision and skill in initiating the HEDIR. Health educators benefit on a daily basis from this international listserv. Mark joins a truly distinguished group of AAHE Scholars - his recognition is well-deserved.

Again, congratulations to Mark for this award.

With regard to civil rights, it at least appears that the two front running

Democrats support social justice (though still taking a rather conservative

stance) as opposed to front runners of the Republican party. This would ad=

d

another key component to the Employment Nondiscrimination Act=97likely the

most important and least publicized civil rights act in decades.

To quote Hairspray, "You got a whole lotta ugly comin' at you from a

never-ending parade of stupid." Mike Huckabee hopes to be the Master of

Ceremonies of this parade.

For example, "Unless Moses comes down with two stone tablets from Brokeback

Mountain to tell us something different, we need to keep that understanding

of marriage."-- Mike Huckabee

"In April of last year, Gov. Lynch and the state of New Hampshire passed a

bill officially recognizing civil unions for gay and lesbian couples. This

courageous act showed us that the idea of America =96 fairness, justice and

equal opportunity =96 can become a reality when we have the courage to stan=

d

up for what is right."=97John Edwards

"Today, New Hampshire has started a New Year by taking an important step

forward that will make a meaningful difference in the lives of so many gay

and lesbian couples. As President, I'll work for the day when all gay and

lesbian couples in America can enjoy the same legal rights and privileges a=

s

straight couples. It's time to stop using these issues to divide us; it's

time to embrace a future of tolerance, equality, and hope."=97Barack Obama
