Yes,
I can tell you are brilliant and think out of the box. And ... we agree with our skepticism abut government agenda's for behavior change. I prefer and have been involved in community based interventions here and abroad that give a Voice. But the communities I have chosen to serve often have belief systems that have to be honored before real change to happen. In my humble experience, a contempt for that gets one nowhere. I can tell you are well read and articulate but our profession is being steered by those who would forget the Voice and confuse issues with chatter and arrogance. You clearly have the brains, the know how and the clout to help with a strategy for success. I on the other hand am just a health educator, working in the trenches but see how health educators could impact this world our credibility was respected. Yes, I was harsh but not for your views, but for the urgency I see necessary for the field of health education.

Dear Folks:=0D
Kudos to James, J D Visker, Mary, Lisa, Martha, Kristi, Joe, Nelson, Mark and even Donna S (the latter for for expressing her exasperation with fre= e inquiry and tolerance) -- all of whom have prodded, in one way or another= , the listserve readers to consider the connections (or lack of same) betwe= en religion and well-being and much more. Perhaps some of the frustration comes from the absence of a call to action. =0D =0D Well, health educators ought to know about HR 888 and consider taking som= e.=20 Here's the deal. =0D While Congressional resolutions have no force of law, and are usually recognized for what they are: Posturing by bloviating politicians who pathetically pander and pontificate pitifully. A recent case in point is House Resolution 888, an excrescence of an act to proclaim the first week= of May as =93American Religious History Week.=94 =93American Fornication Wee=
k=94 would
be an improvement, as would =93American Voters Are Fools Week.=94 HR 888 = is much worse than the usual such resolution =96 it sports no fewer than six seri= ous flaws:=0D It contains misleading statements and thus distorts rather than commemora= tes the nation=92s heritage. =0D It misrepresents statements attributed to some of our founders. =0D It implies that Christianity is the basis for our country=92s laws and institutions. =0D It ignores our traditions as a secular republic with separation between church and state. =0D It does not recognize that in America, believers and nonbelievers enjoy equal rights. =0D It overlooks and even denies the fundamental principle that public policy should be based on secular considerations, not religious dogmas. =0D One big problem with the distorted resolution is that it will become fodd= er fact for the faithful who are seeking to impose their religious values on the rest of us in America.=0D It is NOT a =93fact=94 that religion provides =93the inseparable foundati=
on=94 for
this country=92s =93legal systems and societal structures.=94 =0D We must not remove the wall of separation by displays of religious propaganda (e.g., the Ten Commandments) in public places. =0D We should not =93acknowledge=94 our religious foundations (that don=92t e=
xist)
with government-sponsored prayer and religious ceremonies (a vile example= of which is the Prayer, I mean, Pledge of Allegiance). =0D I just finished reading what has been called =93a devastating portrait of= how American history is commemorated,=94 namely, Lies Across America: What Ou= r Historical Sites Got Wrong by James W. Loewen (Touchstone, 1999). It deal= s with the distortions, errors and gross lies conveyed by over 100 historic= al markers, monuments and so on found throughout the USA. The Congress, in t= his case, is going down the same path.=0D According to a press release from Nathan Bupp of the Council for Secular Humanism entitled, =93The Council for Secular Humanism Chides Congress fo= r Disrespecting Religions,=94 House Resolution 888 would set a dangerous precedent. For more, call (716) 636-4869 x 218 or E-mail Mr. Bupp at nbupp@centerforinquiry.net.=0D Meanwhile, consider a run for Congress, support for organizations like "T= he Council for Secular Humanism" and best ways to engage your students (and others on the HEDIR listserve) about the need to protect our secular Republic and continue, despite these terrible situations, to look on the bright side of life.=0D =0D =0D Don
