Hello to the HEDIR,
This post is indirectly related to health and is intended to solicit some sage wisdom from the men on this list. I have often been impressed by the level of discourse on the HEDIR and if you are as interested in men's health issues as I am, this maybe a relevant challenge.
My only son turns 16 in a few days and as a present I wanted to give him some collected thoughts on what it means to be a man in today's society. To accomplish this I emailed a number of friends with the following request and was interested in seeing if there are members of this list who would like to contribute to the discussion. Please press Delete if you are not interested.
Hey Guys,
In some societies males go through a rite of passage that brings them to manhood. Sometimes a boy is sent off alone into the wilderness on a vision quest where he is to prove himself as a man. In other cultures there is a ceremony to mark the transition to manhood, but in contemporary American society we have few such ceremonies and few formal lessons on what it means to become a man. Not long ago, I read about a father who had arranged for his son to go for a walk with five of his friends. Each would walk for one mile and talk about what it meant to be a man before handing the son off to another friend. One discussed work life, one talked about religion, one talked about women and love, one talked about family and community, and one talked about men, leadership and making a difference.
So, I have a BIG favor to ask during this already busy holiday season. My son Dominic turns 16 on January 18th and while I would love to fly you all down to Grenada to walk the beach with him, this is not within our budget.
Not to say that you would not be welcome to visit at anytime, but I would like you to think about what words of advice you might like to share with him. Think about what you wish you knew when you were 16. What do you wish that someone had told you about being a man. I am reminded of a line from the movie Little Miss Sunshine when the grandfather (Alan Arkin) gives advice to his teenage grandson about women. If you haven't seen the film, I would recommend that you check it out.
I'm sure that all of you will have profound things to say and what I would like to ask you to do is either record what you would say to Dominic, or send me the text and I will put it into a Podcast for him. Most of you have computers that can record and digitize your message, but if this is a deterrent, just write it out in an email and I will share it with him. You can say whatever you want and however much you want to say. You can be serious or funny. Feel free to discuss male and female relationships, career advice, learning, taking risks, how to behave as an athlete, ambition and goal setting, God, politics, sex, drugs, or what ever else you think a young guy should know. I am not trying to shirk my duty as a father, but I do respect each of you and would love Dominic to benefit from your combined wisdom.
16 is a great time in a guy's life and I can't think of a better gift to give my son. If you can't find the time to do this, no worries I still love you guys. I just thought this would be a fun challenge for you. By the way, if you knew me when I was young and dumb, please do not use this time to share stories of what his father did when he was young. Some things are better left unsaid, or for another time.
Ernie

I appreciate the message Don Ardell posted under on this subject. While Don has a flair for the irreverent and tends to incite some strong reactions, it is important to monitor legislation that threatens our freedoms and guards against efforts to give advantage in governance to a particular religious orientation or religious views over secular ones. His call to action is a sound one.

The current discussion has been interesting to say the least.
Here is a news item I came across today which relates to public perceptions about religion I thought was pertinent.
Survey: Majority of Americans Support Religious Expression in the Public Square
Baptist Press reports that most Americans believe it should be legal to have voluntary student-led prayers at public school events, display the Ten Commandments inside a court building and allow religious displays on city-owned property, according to research released by Ellison Research of Phoenix. As part of the survey, Ellison presented a number of scenarios to a representative sample of 1,007 American adults and asked whether various modes of religious expression generally should or should not be legal in the United States. Results indicated that 90 percent said the law should support religious groups renting public property, such as a public school gym or a library room; 89 percent said it should be legal for a public school teacher to permit a moment of silence for prayer or contemplation for all students during class time; and 88 percent believe it should be legal for public school teachers to wear religious symbols.
By the way, today has been proclaimed Religious Freedom Day.
Thanks and be well,
Regards,
Richard Fee 502-852-0549 FAX 852-4534

Preference will be given to proposals that describe successful collaborations with other groups to address the health issues of school-aged children and other youth.
Application deadline: February 15, 2008
The program applications are available through on-line submission at ASHA's web site
www.ashaweb.org/annual_conferences.html.About ASHA
