Mark,

The Coalition of National Health Education Organizations (CNHEO) has had a task force working on crosswalking the CHES competencies with the PH competencies. The report this task force has been preparing for CNHEO lists the commonalities and the differences between the two sets of competencies. Health educators prepared in schools of public health may find this report useful in making decisions about choosing which certificate to pursue.

Note: the CHES competencies have been validated much more completely than the PH competencies. The PH competencies are virtually unvalidated. Also, only graduates of accredited public health preparation programs are eligible to pursue the PH credential, whereas health educators prepareded in any health education preparation program with 25 semester hours of health education courserwork is eligible to take the CHES exam.

Hope this response is helpful.

I'm very interested in the PH certification and it's ramifications. I've =

not done CHES yet because there's not much awareness for the certification =

in New York City from my experience. Yet, the CHES goals are exactly what I=

want to be expert in. I was also discouraged by the local SOPHE chapter wh=

ich seems to be reorganizing and not meeting. My MPH program most likely wi=

ll promote the PH program and I will go to a meeting set up by Public Healt=

h Association of New York next month.

I think it is interesting (I think I might take it, although I am not sure at this point). I do think that it is a response to the CHES exam by non-health education public health practitioners.

Just my thoughts. I was not in the meetings when APHA decided to go down this route. I know that some CHES are concerned that these are competing and not complementary credentials.
