Heart Group Backs Drug Made by Ally

After a study last week showed Vytorin, an expensive combination of two drugs for cholesterol, worked no better than cheap Zocor alone in reducing artery plaque that can lead to heart attacks, the American Heart Association came to the drug’s defense.

In a statement issued on Jan. 15, the day after the report’s release, the heart association said the study was too limited to draw conclusions about Vytorin’s ability to reduce heart attacks or deaths compared to Zocor alone. The group advised patients not to abruptly stop taking it without consulting their doctors.

What the association did not note in its statement, however, was that the group receives nearly $2 million a year from Merck/Schering-Plough Pharmaceuticals, the joint venture that markets Vytorin.

Dr. Daniel W. Jones, the president of the American Heart Association, who was quoted in the Jan. 15 statement, said Wednesday that his group did not typically mention its drug company sponsors when issuing news releases with advice to patients.

The House Energy and Commerce Committee plans Thursday to send letters to the association and Merck/Schering-Plough asking about their relationship, a spokeswoman for the committee said. A letter will also be sent to the American College of Cardiology, a much smaller group, which also receives drug industry money and which also released a statement last week advising patients not to stop taking Vytorin without consulting their doctors.

Senator Clinton and Senator Obama -- One gets more money than anyone from drug companies. The other one takes more money than anyone from Washington lobbyists. What's happened to the Democratic Party? Whatever happened to the party of the people? I am asking each of my friends and colleagues who has a vote in a primary election or caucus to consider joining me in supporting John Edwards by clicking on my personal fundraising page below and reading a little more of my thoughts about why I support his presidential candidacy:

Any undergraduate or graduate student who is a member in good standing of Eta Sigma Gamma can submit a manuscript for consideration. Students may submit their manuscripts individually, or two or more students may collaborate on a single manuscript.

=20

What type of Manuscripts are Appropriate?

Empirical research papers (data-based), systematic literature reviews on specific topics, theoretical pieces, case studies about aspects of program planning and/or evaluation, practical perspectives, commentaries and position papers, and other creative papers related to health promotion, health education, and health science are encouraged. Students should consider revising and submitting appropriate papers, which they have written during their professional preparation. Only original manuscripts that have not been accepted or published previously will be considered.

=20

How are Manuscripts Evaluated and Selected for Publication?

All manuscripts must meet the author guidelines (see below). Each manuscript will receive a blind review from at least three reviewers.

Selection criteria will include relevance of topic to health education, timeliness, originality, writing style and grammar, content accuracy, clarity, and economy of expression. Based on the results of the review and availability of space, the Monograph will select and publish as many manuscripts as possible.

Author Guidelines

Prepare manuscripts using the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition). Manuscripts will not be accepted if APA style is not used.

=20

Manuscripts are limited to 10 pages, excluding title pages, abstract page, and APA-style reference list.

=20

Manuscripts must type-written or printed on white 8.5" x 11" paper and double-spaced throughout, including abstract and reference list, using a 12-point serif typeface (e.g., Times Roman or Courier). Type must be laser or letter quality. Format all page margins at 1.0". Also, do not justify lines; instead, use the "align left" style and leave the right margin uneven, or ragged. Follow the APA style for the preparation of reference citation within the text and the reference list. The reference list at the end of the manuscript must provide complete information about each entry. Also, it must include the sources that specifically support the manuscript. Make sure reference citations within the text and each citation entry in the reference list agree. Follow APA style for typeface, use of uppercase and lowercase letters, headings, quotations, tables and table titles, and figures and figure citations.

=20

Include two title pages with the manuscript. The first page must include a running head, a manuscript title, full names of all authors, year in school of student authors, institutional affiliation, ESG chapter affiliation, complete mailing addresses and telephone numbers for all authors, and list the name and telephone number of the faculty sponsor.

E-mail addresses and fax numbers for all authors should also be included. The second title page should only include the manuscript title.

=20

A 120-word abstract must accompany each manuscript. Prepare abstracts using the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th edition).

=20

Number pages consecutively, beginning with the first title page as page one, followed by the second title page (page two), the abstract (page three), text, references, and visuals. Position page numbers at the top-right of each page.

=20

Your Eta Sigma Gamma chapter sponsor or another faculty member should review the manuscript for grammar, spelling, format and content, and complete the Faculty Sponsor Form MS WORD. Include one copy of the completed Faculty Sponsor Form with your submitted manuscript.

Here is another request for help to the amazing collective expertise of the HEDIR list. I am preparing a 50 minute presentation to first year medical students on prevention counseling/education in their clinical practice. The title is: Improving Patient Health Through Counseling for Behavior Change, or something like that. Have others given a similar presentation to Docs?

So far I have adapted materials and ideas from some of the following

resources: the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force¹s Guide to Clinical Preventive Services, A Step-by-Step Guide to Delivering Clinical Preventive

Services: A Systems Approach, One minute to prevention (Stange, KG, et al., 2002), Patient counseling and education: Should doctors be doing more?

(Wilson, JF, 2006) and other selected references. I plan on using the template of the Five A¹s (Assess, Advise, Agree, Assist, Arrange) with examples from tobacco cessation, physical activity and nutrition to motivate action on the part of these future clinicians. I plan to briefly discuss, targeting messages through the use of HRAs, Stages of change, and elements of motivational interviewing.

Examining barriers to prevention counseling by physicians (e.g., Lack of Prevention Training and Knowledge, Lack of Confidence that Prevention Makes a Difference, Lack of Time, Inadequate Reimbursement for Prevention Services, Lack of Prevention Resources) do folks have ideas on where they would focus their presentation given the short time limit that is given? If this were a 4 hour workshop I would devote more time to skill development (i.e., motivational interviewing), but I¹m not sure what sort of impact can be expected with first year med students. Anyone know of other resources that I should make use of?

Ernie

Subject: FW: 2008 APHA Call for Abstracts (Caucus on Public Health & theFaith Community)

** Call for Nominations

** HEDIR Technology Award

**

** The HEDIR RSS

Been asked to forward this.

The Caucus on Public Health and the Faith Community seeks to promote and enhance collaborations between communities of faith and all facets of the public health, addressing biological, physical, mental, emotional, environmental, spiritual and social health challenges. From this perspective, the CPHFC believes that public health interventions and research routinely goes beyond the borders of traditional public health practice.

In relation to the 2008 APHA Call for Abstracts, the CPHFC encourages abstract submissions that emphasize faith-based collaborations and involvement in local, state, national, or transnational public health interventions. In addition to submissions that address the annual meeting theme, Public Health Without Borders, we also request abstracts that focus on the following:

Environmental health promotion programs led by communities of faith             Evaluation of faith-based public health interventions             Evidence-based health promotion programs in communities of faith             Public health partnerships (i.e., academic, governmental) with communities of faith             Quantitative and qualitative research examining spirituality and health

We especially encourage community-based groups and students to submit.

All abstracts must be submitted with at least two learning objectives in the proper APHA format (i.e., "By the end of the session, the participant will be able to…"). Please check the abstract title and text for spelling and grammatical errors. Do not include your name or contact information in the text portion as this prohibits blind peer review. Failure to adhere to these guidelines may result in your abstract being rejected. If you are unable to identify a specific session for your abstract, please submit it under "Other." Lastly, all abstracts should contain sufficient details to fully evaluate the value of the work rather than alluding to what "will be"

included in the presentation. Abstracts that do not adhere to these requirements will not be reviewed.

Following are instructions for submitting a proposal for an entire session (if applicable):

(1) Submit each abstract separately (up to four abstracts per session) to the same topic area. If a session proposal includes abstracts submitted to multiple topic areas, the session proposal will be considered incomplete.

(2) Contact the program planners (kcoleman@georgiasouthern.edu or

yvonlewis@hotmail.com) with:

(a) a brief overview of the session (including relevance to public health and faith-based programming),

(b) at least three proposed learning objectives in APHA format for the entire session (all individual abstracts that are part of the proposed session must have individual learning objectives), and

(c) the title, first author, and abstract number of all abstracts to be included in the session.

Session proposals that do not adhere to these requirements will not be considered. Please contact the program planner if you have any questions.

Individuals should submit an abstract only if they are committed to presenting the paper or poster themselves or to finding a substitute willing to register, attend the meeting, and present the paper or poster instead.

Invitations to present will be withdrawn should authors of award abstracts be unable to present at the Annual Meeting. Please refer to the abstract submission page for abstract submission guidelines (http://apha.confex.com/apha/136am/oasys.epl).

The session topics are preliminary and do not reflect the precise content of the final program, which will be based on peer-reviewer evaluations, program theme, and diversity of topics. Neither APHA nor the Caucus on Public Health and the Faith Community can provide any financial support (including, but not limited to, registration, airfare, lodging, etc.) for author attendance at the Annual Meeting.

Those interested in promoting and enhancing collaborations between communities of faith and all facets of the public health are invited to join the CPHFC. All APHA members are invited to submit abstracts to the Caucus, and you do not have to be a member of the Caucus on Public Health and the Faith Community in order to submit an abstract. Please contact the program planners for more information about Caucus on Public Health and the Faith Community membership.

Submitting an abstract to the Caucus on Public Health and the Faith Community implies that you understand the terms of this call for abstracts.

Failure to adhere to the instructions outlined in the call for abstracts may result in your abstract not being considered and may impact future submissions. Further, submitting the abstract implies that you (and/or co-authors or colleagues) are willing to present the abstract at the Annual Meeting.

The submission deadline is February, 5, 2008 at 11:59 (Pacific Time). To submit abstracts, go to http://apha.confex.com/apha/136am/cphfc.htm
