Hi,

I am looking to measure the economic impact of primary care physicians.

Any thoughts on free software or access to state-level multipliers?

Dear Lorraine,

Try the health department websites for those cities and states. Chicago's Health Dept website

is:

<http://egov.cityofchicago.org/city/webportal/portalEntityHomeAction.do?entityName=Health&entityNameEnumValue=21>

The state of Illinois is: <http://www.idph.state.il.us/>

I've got 2 days to figure this out for a "new" class I'll be teaching, and have a few thoughts which I've shared below, but need more!

Does anyone have any recommends of readings, booklets, government publications and/or texts for a Health Education and Outreach (ideally no more than $30) that covers principles of:

1. Public speaking

2. Interviewing

3. Outreach/Canvassing

4. (Informal) Counseling

5. Group dynamics principles

6. Health literacy - Adult Literacy Media Alliance has a nice package

of 8 lessons "TV411: Health Smarts"

7. Making referrals

8. Material development - NCI's "The Pink Book: Making Health

Communication Programs Work" comes to mind as does the Cancer Society's "Beyond the Brochure" which are both available on line for free.

Ever practical, I'm actually thinking of using past and present columns from Tools of the Trade, but there's pressure to require a "real text."

Any thoughts? Many thanks!

In yet one more story about the real State of the Union comes a story not only about FEMA waffling about the dangers of formaldehyde in trailers given to the displaced of hurricane Katrina but evidence now suggest that there was active manipulation of the research.

---

WASHINGTON - The Federal Emergency Management Agency manipulated scientific research in order to play down the danger posed by formaldehyde in trailers issued to hurricane victims, according to an investigation by congressional Democrats released Monday.

FEMA "ignored, hid and manipulated government research on the potential impact of long-term exposure to formaldehyde" on Katrina and Rita victims now living in FEMA trailers, Democrats on a House Science and Technology subcommittee wrote in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff. FEMA is part of the Homeland Security Department.

Down in New Orleans, hundreds of thousands of people lost their homes and untold numbers lost their lives because the levees we built were too weak and too low. We knew better, but we didn't act because we didn't want to look. That's how it is with the moral foundations of our society. All over this country, too many children are growing up in harm's way â€" and too many lives are being washed away â€" because the levees we've built are too weak and too low. I am asking each of my friends and colleagues who has a vote in a primary election or caucus to consider joining me in supporting John Edwards by clicking on my personal fundraising page below and reading a little more of my thoughts about why I support his presidential candidacy:

Karen,

One radical thought is to consider using Hesperian's classic "Helping Health Workers Learn" but that might be a bit too radical for your audience.

While not in your price range, I have a peer who speaks highly of two books that sounds similar to what you are trying to acomplish

Health Promotion in Communities http://www.springerpub.com/prod.aspx?prod_id=14075
