Have many of you seen this show, which I saw on the History Channel? =20 (I think it is also a book) Doe anybody know anything with regard to =20 its accuracy?

It is very powerful (and scary) in explaining the situation =20 regarding our reliance on Oil and its relationship to global warming. =20=

If it is accurate it does not paint a very promising picture - if we =20 continue to use oil as we have, we will either run out soon which =20 will devastate all economies and push global warming forward, =20 especially if amplifiers such as polar ice caps melt. The =20 implications are devastating, what should we do, it has a major =20 relationship to public health.

Here is a description of the show I saw on Sunday:

=95 That's oil, folks! It took 160 million years to create and it all =20=

could be consumed within two centuries. A two-hour special, "Crude," =20 taps this vital topic =97 the raw material that powers the modern world =20=

and drives the development of everything from plastic bags to =20 painkillers. Humans today are slaves to this ancient, messy residue =20 of sun-baked plankton goo, and "Crude" covers the geologic history. =20 But with our ever-growing demand, has production of oil already =20 peaked? How much more of its waste can we afford to pump into the =20 atmosphere? On location where the richest deposits of "black gold" =20 formed, oil and geology experts explain the atmospheric conditions =20 that created oil and speculate on what will happen if we keep burning =20=

it at a rapidly increasing rate. "Crude" premieres 8 p.m. Sunday on =20 the History Channel.

I am interested in what others think about this show/topic/situation. =20=

Thank you.

Craig:

Thanks for bringing this to HEDIR - it is an issue for Health Educators

(as well as Urban Planners, Economists, Farmers, Energy Analysts and

Local, County, State, and Federal officials). Public Health and Social

Services professionals have not been paying as much attention to this

issue as have other sectors. There's great concern on the part of

Energy Analysts, Petroleum Geologists, and Economists about the effects

of $10 and $15 /gallon gas on the US (and world). It's as big as

Climate Change, and while we'll feel the effects sooner, the solutions

are the same as those identified for Climate Change.

In Portland Oregon, a "Peak Oil" Task Force was formed by the local

City Commission to look at the effects of oil depletion on the City. We

were the first in the country to do so. Since that time, Legislatures

in the States of Connecticut and Vermont have begun to address the

issue, as have many communities around the country. The Marion County

Health Department in Indianapolis, Indiana was the first Public Health

Department to address the issue. The CDC has also started to pay

attention.
