61st Annual UN - DPI/NGO Conference

Reaffirming Human Rights for All:

The Universal Declaration at 60 -- UNESCO Headquarters, Paris, France -- 3-5 September 2008

More than 2000 international Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) representatives and other civil society partners are expected to gather at UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, from 3 -5 September 2008, to discuss ways and means for strengthening collaboration between local communities and global institutions. They will meet during the 61st annual DPI/NGO Conference, Reaffirming Human Rights for All: The Universal Declaration at 60. The three day gathering of NGOs is organized by the UN Department of Public Information (DPI) in partnership with the NGO/DPI Executive Committee as well as NGOs which have consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council. As an annual meeting taking place on the eve of the opening of the General Assembly, the Conference has become an established forum for networking and exchange of views, opinions, and expertise and best practices on relevant issues. In addition to two plenary sessions and five roundtables, there will be forty-two midday NGO Workshops featuring the participation of civil society, United Nations, government and private sector representatives. NGOs, working together with UN, governmental and other community groups will leave the Conference with knowledge of measures and goals which can be achieved by working together to understand and reaffirm human rights for all. The Conference aims to discuss ways and means to contribute to enhanced awareness of the meaning of human rights today as set forth in the Universal Declaration 60 years ago in Paris.

Updated SAMHSA Directory of Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment Programs Now Available

A new, updated guide to finding local substance abuse treatment programs is now available from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).  National Directory of Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment Programs 2008 provides information on thousands of alcohol and drug treatment programs located in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and five U.S. territories. This SAMHSA National Directory includes public and private facilities that are licensed, certified, or otherwise approved by substance abuse agencies in each state.  The directory gives important information on levels of care and types of facilities, including those with programs for adolescents, persons with co-occurring substance abuse and mental disorders, individuals living with HIV/AIDS, and pregnant women.  The updated directory complements SAMHSA's internet-based Substance Abuse Treatment Facility Locator.  The online service, which is updated regularly and may contain more current information, provides searchable road maps to the nearest treatment facilities, complete addresses, phone numbers and specific information on services available. The electronic, searchable version of SAMHSA's updated National Directory of Drug and Alcohol Abuse Treatment Programs is available on the Web at http://FindTreatment.samhsa.gov/

Hard copies of the Directory may be obtained free of charge from SAMHSA's Health Information Network at 1-877-SAMHSA-7 (1-877-726-4727).  Request inventory number

New Web Resource Helps Parents Grasp Teen Behavior and Connect with Their Kids"

Available now at the web site of the Partnership for a Drug Free America, www.drugfree.org/teenbrain

"A Parent's Guide to the Teen Brain" brings to life research showing that the brain is not fully developed until about age 25.  With video, humorous interactive segments, role-playing and advice from experts, parents learn that ongoing brain development contributes to the vexing teen behaviors that confound and often put parents off - impulsiveness, rebellion, high emotions, questionable judgment and risk-taking.  The resource also includes tips to help parents establish (or re-create) the parent-teen relationship so essential to guiding teens through any one of the number of challenges they face, alcohol and drug temptations included.

The product was developed by the Partnership for a Drug Free America ("Partnership") in collaboration with Boston-based WGBH, leaders in public broadcasting and educational multimedia, with the Philadelphia-based Treatment Research Institute supplying science guidance.

for some reason I can never post to the hedir when on the road...weird. Would you post this for me...

In the late 1990's President Clinton established the presidents advisory commission on consumer protection and quality in the health care industry, and they in turn released the consumer bill of rights and responsibilities. I am assuming that group disbanded with the changing of the political guard. So is there an equivalent group now, and whatever happened to the cBRR?

Subject: Presidential Health Care Commissions

Hello,

To my knowledge, the two commissions below and a couple of policies have been important foci of the Bush Presidential Administration.  I think that there was a third impactful commission or committee, but I cannot recall off the top of my head what it was at the moment.

President's New Freedom Commission on Mental Health http://www.mentalhealthcommission.gov/

President's Commission on Care for America's Returning Wounded Warriors http://www.pccww.gov/

Other important policies include:

Medicare Modernization Act of 2003

Trade Adjustment Act of 2002

Other Health Savings Account related policies
