Subject: Re: HEDIR-L Digest - 17 Jul 2008 to 18 Jul 2008 (#2008-152)
Dear Colleagues:
I am excited to share with you good news about my good friend, colleague, and
co-editor of the American Journal of Sexuality Education, Elizabeth Schroeder,
Ed.D., M.S.W., and one of the most vital organizations addressing sexuality
education, Answer (based at Rutgers University).
On September 2, 2008 Dr. Schroeder will join Answer as their new executive
director. Dr. Schroeder brings to Answer over 15 years of experience as an
internationally known trainer, consultant and author in the areas of sexuality
education, youth development, curriculum and counseling. Dr. Schroeder is best
known for providing trainings throughout the United States and overseas to
thousands of youth-serving professionals, adolescents and parents and shares
Answer’s firm belief that teens have a right to honest and accurate sexuality
education.
The co-founding editor of the American Journal of Sexuality Education, Dr.
Schroeder has written extensively about sexuality. She is the co-author of
Making SMART Choices: A Curriculum for Young People and Being Out, Staying Safe:
An STD Prevention Curriculum for LGBQ Youth; she also authored chapters in
Health Counseling: Applications and Theory and The Continuum Complete
International Encyclopedia of Sexuality and contributed a lesson to the
curriculum, New Expectations: Sexuality Education for Mid- and Later Life. She
was also editor of Taking Sides: Clashing Views in Controversial Issues in
Family and Personal Relationships, 5th, 6th and 7th editions.
Most recently, Dr. Schroeder served as an assistant professor at Montclair State
University. She is also the former associate vice president of education and
training at Planned Parenthood of New York City, and before that, was the
manager of education and special projects at Planned Parenthood Federation of
America.
Dr. Schroeder has been recognized with numerous honors throughout her career,
including the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and
Therapists' Schiller Prize for her approach to teaching Internet safety to
youth, and the Association of Planned Parenthood Leaders in Education’s Mary Lee
Tatum award, which is given annually to "the person who most exemplifies the
qualities of an ideal sexuality educator." She currently chairs the SIECUS Board
of Directors, and has served on numerous local and state Task Forces and
committees. She holds a Master's Degree in Social Work from New York University
and a Doctorate of Education from Widener University.
Most importantly, Dr. Schroeder has a passion for Answer’s mission to provide
and promote comprehensive sexuality education to young people and the adults who
teach them. Answer's staff and board are confident that her enthusiasm and
strong leadership will help them reach their goal of ensuring high-quality
sexuality education for young people and amplifying their voices around this
issue.
