Pete and others,
The example below my signature is what happens for some if you are in a
DIGEST mode (receiving one emails a day). Apparently the use of
attachments/graphics causes havoc with the DIGEST mode. If you are in the
digest mode, you can do the following:
Compose email to: listserv@siu.edu
Skip the subject line
In the text, type:
Set hedir-l NODIG
You should get a confirmation memo indicating this has been completed.
NOTE: you must send from the EXACT email account that you are registered
with. If you want to see your REGISTERED email, go to
www.hedir.org/directory Anything different will be treated as a hostile
email and will not be recognized. For example, kittle@siu.edu is different
than kittle@mail.siu.edu I may still be able to receive emails from HEDIR,
but I can't send unless I send them from the first one.

Apologies for
any duplicate postings:
For the past 3 months I have been working with the Sliepcevich family
through Dr. Elaine M. Vitello on a professional tribute for Dr. Elena M.
Sliepcevich that she would want. As life’s events unfolded and we lost several
other treasured leaders, the initial project took on expanded importance and
implications.
Given the historical and close affiliation of many of these leaders with
Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), having a means for Health
Education to capture the legacies of these legends is appropriate. I have been
asked to serve as coordinator / director of this project. In this capacity, I
will be the primary liaison for the Center to campus contacts, the families, and
other interested parties. Although preparations related to the Center’s
activities continue, a general concept of this evolving plan follows in this
draft proposal.
This tribute serves a two-fold purpose. First, as indicated, is to honor and
maintain the work and spirit of selected influential Health Education leaders.
Secondly, the proposal addresses widespread concerns about losing much of our
on-going professional history (past, present, and future).
We are in the initial phase of establishing the ELENA M. SLIEPCEVICH
CENTER FOR HEALTH EDUCATION STUDIES to be housed at the newly
renovated SIUC Morris Library. In cooperation with the skilled Morris Library
staff, a key component of the Center will be a Special Collection in a
dedicated area.
Phase One of the Center will be launched with contributions to the Special
Collection from the Sliepcevich family including primary documents from the
SHES Study among other invaluable historical pieces. A trained archivist will
catalogue, process, and store in a climate controlled, secure environment these
historical documents and other media forms. Eventually they will have an on-line
guide to become accessible to the profession in a variety of formats for use in
historical research and other aspects of professional Health Education
activities. The initial goal is to have these be “living” resources that
encourage use by professionals and students within a year.
The Center will be structured to provide additional contributions /collections
from other key leaders. Clearly, the work of Robert Russell, William Carlyon
among others will be among the initial documents sought for these
“sub-Centers.” After procedures are developed, we plan to more formally contact
appropriate representatives (and welcome contact from anyone who might have
important historical and contemporary documents) to determine interest in adding
to this Center. Additional “sub-centers” may focus on topical areas such as
Philosophy, Theory, Curriculum and so on.
Further options related to the Center also are under discussion. Potential
considerations include endowed graduate assistantship(s) and an annual symposium
that provides a forum for scholarly work created through use of the Center.
The Sliepcevich family will provide initial funding for the naming opportunity
of the Center. Additional contributions from others may be made via the SIUC
Foundation account established through the Health Education program. Donations
should be addressed to SIU Foundation with the Center identified on the
“Memo” line. If you have questions concerning the Center and supporting this
initiative, please contact me via e-mail: jdrolet@siu.edu.
Clearly, this is a complex logistical process with many pieces to become a
reality. Please know that a purposeful process worthy of these important
individuals who have touched our lives directly and indirectly is underway.
A formal description of various opportunities to participate in this project
will follow as soon as mechanisms have been identified and put in place. I will
continue to provide updates as we work toward formalizing the Sliepcevich family
deed of gift and Center Mission Statement.
