Folks, Another technology marvel is Goog 411 (part of the Google plan to conquer the world). From your cell phone you can contact google’s 411…for free (air time may be used)…it’s pretty good. Go to http://www.google.com/goog411/ for more information. If you are seeking a business they will automatically connect you with that business and send you a map via your cell phone. Another interesting service is https://www.chacha.com/ where you can ask any question and get an answer back. You have to register but it seems to work pretty good.

Hello,
For the past few years a colleague and I been conducting a study session a
couple weeks prior to the April and October CHES exams for people taking or
thinking about taking the CHES exam. We base the study session on the NCHEC
published study guide, suggestions that have been shared on the HEDIR, and have
produced some of our own materials. But we've hit a stumbling block in our
preparations. We are hoping the health education community can help us.
While overall most of the people we have worked with pass the exam, over the
past several tests we have noticed a (admittedly unscientific) trend of people
who are not in school or recently graduated from a professional program failing
the exam more often than people taking the test prior to or just after
graduation. Based on continued interaction with them (some have taken the test
two or three times and are active in the health education community in our
state), we believe that the participants have the knowledge and skills.
Reviewing theory, definitions, strategies doesn't seem to help. Their challenge
is demonstrating those skills and knowledge.
We are looking for suggestions and resources that will help us work with those
who have been out of school for a while to help them feel more confident in
their test-taking abilities and increase their test-taking skills. If you
recently took the CHES exam in October 2007 or April 2008, we especially want to
hear from you, but would appreciate any suggestions and references! We'll be
glad to share anything we learn with others who are interested.
Thank you,
Meg

Hello!
I took this year the exam and I passed.
I would like to help mentor and support the people interested to take the exam.
Do you have specific questions / guidelines to address this challenge????

Greetings,
I took the exam in April 2007 after being out of school for some time. I took a more extensive distance learning prep course through the University of Alabama. Thank God, I passed the exam.
I believe a more extensive preparation course would be appropriate for those who've been out of school for some time. Although I studied solo for the distance learning course I took, I suspect there would also have been some value in being part of a study group where participants could review/discuss together key concepts and exchange experiences from their real-life jobs/work.

Laura,
I JUST got my results 2 days ago in the mail although I checked the NCHEC
website last week and I had a certification number and an expiration date so
I assumed I had passed. It just took a little longer for the results to
arrive by mail.

I took the exam in April and passed! I found that the NCHEC study materials
really did not help at all with the exam other than giving a general
overview. Unfortunately, I graduated with my MPH back in August so I was
pretty rusty with some of the evaluation techniques, etc. but I managed to
get over that hurdle I guess.

Yikes, Mark!
My graduate assistant asked a sexual health question to the chacha.com Q&A text service: “What I miss a birth control pill?”
The answer came in a few minutes later by text message: “If you miss 3 or more days in a row, be sure to use a condom or a back-up method of protection.” This was the answer website provided: www.wdxcyber.com/bcp.htm.
As a health educator, would you say this answer is correct or incorrect??? And is the question fully answered?
Of note, “Jason B”, a high school student apparently, answered her question. Jason B has conducted more than 1,000 searches for this service, and his search topics include AIDS, Asian, big, boobies, butt, college, crack, female reproductive organs, forecasting, girls, grand slam, growing pot, herpes, and Indiana.
What about that list might make you pause the next time you want to ask this service a question???

Eric,
That’s unfortunate. I sent two out…one unrelated to health (does the Holiday Inn in Akron have indoor parking) but the second one asked ‘What is a health educator?’ and it sent back an accurate (albeit short) description. I did go to the website below and on the question of missing a pill, it listed the following:
If you forget your pills for a day or two, follow the instructions below:
· If you miss one pill, take the forgotten one (yesterday's pill) as soon as you remember it, and take today's pill at the regular time. Although you probably will not become pregnant, use your backup method until your next period to be safe.
· If you miss two pills in a row, take two pills as soon as you remember and two pills the next day. You may have some spotting. Use your backup method of birth control until your next period.
· If you miss three or more pills in a row, start your backup method of birth control immediately. Your ovaries may produce an egg (ovulation), and without a backup contraceptive you could become pregnant. Ask yourself, "Am I a good pill user?" Another method of contraception may be better for you.
Now, am I missing something or is this not accurate information? The problem sounds like they only send (because text can only be so big) a portion of the answer. As health educators we can use this as an example to educator our clients/students that it’s difficult to accurately answer a question in a short sentence. Check out the website for more information (and of course, evaluate the rigor of the website).
I’m curious about Jason…I didn’t get any ‘names’ of who answered my question—where did you get that info? It sounds like Jason has the perfect job for a high schooler…answering questions about sex. J
