Hi Karen:

Actually, the figure that I stated (1 in 4) is not from that report, and = I did not say that they are currently in prison. The 1 in 4 may be a bit = low according to the US Department of Justice site which says the =

following:  =20

*     Based on current rates of first incarceration, an estimated 32% of =

black males will enter State or Federal prison during their lifetime, = compared to 17% of Hispanic males and 5.9% of white males.=20

While I am sure many of those incarcerations are unwarranted and = racially motivated, they are still happening and it is contributing to = the HIV epidemic among African Americans. Here is the site. = http://www.ojp.usdoj.gov/bjs/crimoff.htm#lifetime

I was fortunate to have been able to take courses with Dr.

Sliepcevich.

She served on my Dissertation Committee. If you knew Elena and you knew me, you can appreciate her investment in the future.

She was generous with her time as a mentor to graduate students at SIU.

The School Health Education Study continues to impact on school health curriculum practices today.

Dr. Sliepcevich taught commitment to the profession with dignity and class.

She will be missed.

I agree wholeheartedly with Rick. Elena was not only my dissertation chair, but a great friend. She was always available to assist me with my graduate study as well as provide guidance on my professional career. I am a better person and professional due to my contact with Dr.

Sliepcevich. I wish to echo the thought: she will be missed.

Thanks to Judy for letting us know of Dr. Sliepcevich's passing!

Like Rick and others, I had the good fortune of working with Dr. Sliepcevich.  Some of the very first employment I had in our field was as research assistant to two writers of the School Health Education Study Curriculum: Dr. Bob Russell and Dr. Edward B. "Ned" Johns.  Unlike Rick, I never enrolled in a course taught by Dr. Sliepcevich; she arrived at SIU after I had completed my doctoral coursework.  She was an immense help to me with defense of my dissertation.   My gratitude to her is endless!

I, too, was most fortunate in having my career influenced by Dr. Sliepcevich.  When working on my doctorate degree with my mentor and advisor Dr. E.J. McClendon at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor during the 1970s, part of my dissertation involved research from the SHES Model.  I had wonderful opportunities to work with Dr. Sliepcevich.  I am grateful for that experience.

Further, another tremendous loss to the health education profession has been Dr. E.J. "Mac" McClendon.  These pioneers made a difference for so many of us and the people they mentored.

What many people may not realize about Dr. Sliepcevich is that she truly was the first ambassador for health education.  She brought our field into the political and business arena and did it with such class that we all benefitted.  I never found a subject that Dr. S could not eloquently comment on and most of us who studied with her knew it was because of her love of reading and learning.

Good Afternoon!

I am putting together a proposal for a health education conference plenary session (75 minutes) on the theme of health throughout the life span and would like your input and reactions to my preliminary thoughts.

I am thinking of a two part session including a panel discussion followed by a rousing motivational presentation on the value of addressing health across the life cycle through volunteerism.

Part 1: experts in public health education in the following age breakdown:

birth--school age

adolescents/teens

adults

seniors

talking about the following questions:

1. What are the typical/critical public health issues in these age ranges?

2. What are the classic health ed methodologies used to address these issues in specified age groups?

3. What are the new/cutting edge methodologies used to address each of these age groups public health issues?

4. What are the best principles for designing, implementing and evaluating public health education interventions in these populations?

.Can anyone recommend speakers/discussants who are experts in these populations?

These are the draft questions to date - what do you think.

Does the volunteerism angle appeal to you to show how programs that we have now in the US cover the lifespan...Foster Grandparents,AmeriCorps, VISTA, Learn and Serve, RSVP, Senior Companion Program...and support public health education paid efforts sound appealing to you?  It would show what's currently going on to complement our work and what we can do in our spare time or when we retire!

Thanks!

Jody
