Re: Help working with weight management issues
I love the book Outwit Your Weight. It has a variety of strategies and tools that one can use or encourage others to use in regard to diet improvement. I also like Volumetrics as it has a lot of ideas for people that tend to intake a larger volume of food as it can help them transition to a lower calorie diet without a sense of deprivation.
When keeping track of a clients progress, you can use many things other than BMI and weight. Body composition analysis, tapings, how their body has changed in a specific piece of clothing, a photo diary, ability to maintain a certain physical activity for a certain period of time and how it has increased over time, their flexibility etc.

Like Horace "Hod" Ogden, Dr. Bill Carlyon contributed a good bit of humor at gatherings of health educators during his career. We will need some creative person or persons to take up the Mohan Singh baton. For those less familar with Dr. Bill, who sometimes had visions of colorful conversations with Mohan Singh, he earned his doctorate at SIU-C a decade or so ahead of folks like Bill Livingood, Dale Hart, Hal Wingate, Bob Sorenson, Barbara Cramer, Dick Hurley, Dick Salazar, Anza Ojanlatva, Ed Rouhlac, Warren McNab, Todd Momsen, Phyllis Reed (apologies to contemporary SIU alums I am failing to mention) and me and less than a decade ahead of Dale Ritzel, Jim Rosser, Jim Cook and their contemporariies. I believe Mal Goldsmith, Judy Drolet and Rick Petosa were a few years behind me and my contemporaries.
Like Dr. Sliepcevich, Dr. Bill spent the twilight years of his career on the faculty at SIU-C. Prior to that, he spent a good portion of his career as an officer at the American Medical Association in Chicago guiding a joint committee on health education that involved an alliance between the AMA and AAHE. Bill and Pauline Carlyon represented a dynamic duo of professional health educators with whom it was always a pleasure to work.

In my message about Dr. Bill Carlyon, I listed among the Ph.D. alums of SIUC, who are my contemporaries, Hal Wingate. I meant Hal Wingard Hal I apologize for misspelling your name.
