Hello HEDIR colleagues,

I am exploring the use off-the-shelf software that allows you to create tailored health information.

I have developed many tailored programs and communication over the last 10 years, but have always used highly skilled programmers to do so. My team is very interested in trying out software that allows us to develop our messages, algorithms, communication layout, etc. that could ultimately be used by practitioners and others. I am familiar with FileMaker Pro, but not anything else.

If you have ever used any off the shelf software application (or combination of applications) to create tailored health messages, could you let me know what you used?

Many thanks,

Suzanne

Childhood Obesity Prevention Program and Policy=20

Nominations Requested!

Nominations are being sought for programs or policies that fall into the following 4 areas:=20

  1) Comprehensive School Physical Activity Programs;=20

  2) After school or Daycare programs or policies;=20

  3) Access to healthier foods in supermarkets/convenience stores/restaurants; and=20

  4) Land Use and Transportation Policies/Projects for Physical Activity

As the search for answers to effectively address childhood obesity continues, organizations and communities across the country are experimenting with various strategies aimed at changing children's environments to reduce the incidence of obesity. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

(CDC) are undertaking a 2-year collaborative project to identify and assess local-level programs and policies that have been implemented with apparent notable success to improve the eating habits and physical activity levels of children. Macro International Inc. serves as the coordinating center for the project.

The goal of this project is to conduct evaluability assessments, which are "pre" evaluations to determine if a program is promising and ready for a full evaluation. Programs or policies that have undergone process evaluation may be nominated.

A nominated program or policy that is chosen by our Expert Panel will receive an evaluability assessment, which consists of a 3-day site visit where trained project staff assess program implementation, data collection, and intended program outcomes. As part of the site visit, a limited amount of on-site technical assistance will be provided to each site.

Please see the attached document which explains the project in more detail and where to submit nominations.=20

The submission deadline is Monday, March 31, 2008.=20

Hi Folks,

If you've been observing the weather you'll note that southern Illinois is getting hammered with rain.  We've already had up to 3 inches and they're predicting another 2-3 before this evening.  As a result the campus is experiencing power outages.  Thus, it is possible that the HEDIR server may go down and may not be up and running for several hours (already this day we've had 2 outages resulting in the server closing down).

Thanks for your patience.  In the meantime, I'm lining up with the dozens of paired animals.

I know that race has come up on this list before so I thought I would pass on a few things.

1.  Yesterday I heard that AHRQ released its 2007 report that is an important read. http://www.ahrq.gov/qual/qrdr07.htm

2.  PBS has a new 4 part TV series on health inequities called unnatural causes http://www.unnaturalcauses.org/  (as a side note, Multnomah county, where I work has launded a new health equity initiaitve and is using this series as a catalyst for community dialogues.  For more information, see http://www.mchealth.org/healthequity/)

3.  I am still officially undecided but I think that a pretty impressive place to start talking about race is to listen to the speech today of Barack Obama.  http://my.barackobama.com/page/content/hisownwords/
