To Higher Education Faculty:

Are you looking for ways to contribute significantly to the field of health education?  Are you interested in improving your ability to prepare reports for accrediting bodies?  AAHE is looking for candidates to review applications submitted by teacher preparation institutions for accreditation in health education through the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).  Reviewers contribute to the field by ensuring that colleges and universities that prepare school health educators have the systems in place to turn out well qualified health teachers.  As a reviewer, you will also hone your skills as a compiler when your school is up for accreditation.

Reviewers must either have experience in school health education or be a certified health education specialist (CHES).  To participate in this important service to the profession, please contact the AAHE office aahe@aahperd.org and indicate your willingness to be an NCATE reviewer.

AAHE will offer training for reviewers on Wednesday afternoon at the AAHPERD convention in Fort Worth.  If you are interested, but cannot come to the training, please let the AAHE office know so we can make other arrangements for your training. =20

Reviewers receive Category I CHES contact hours for completing reviews.

Mark Kittleson and other Colleagues:

Occasionally I have seen inquiries on this list, expressed with urgency, seeking feedback defending health education and related required courses in universities and other school settings.  Fortunately, my request today is not borne of an imminent threat to the Personal Wellness undergraduate requirement on my own campus (University of Northern Iowa), but this course, having existed mostly unchanged for 21 years, is getting an appropriate review by students, health education faculty, and other faculty committees.  It is my recollection, Mark, that quite some time ago, you wrote an article about health education general education requirements at the university level.

Our course is, I believe, a traditional personal wellness course, serving approximately 1800 students annually.  In twice-a-week lectures, it addresses decision making, stress management, physical activity, nutrition, and contemporary health threats (cancer, binge drinking,

etc.)  Students also participate in physical activity at least twice a week, including a half semester of aerobic activity, and a half semester of what we have labeled "lifetime activity" (scuba, dancing, ice climbing, back packing are examples).

We are reflecting on how we might best meet 21st-century students' needs and I am asking HEDIR participants to reflect on the place of such a class among the liberal arts core requirements of American universities.  For example, we have never addressed health care economics or policy, but some feel such a course has the potential to prepare students to soundly evaluate insurance providers', politicians'

and policy makers' claims about universal health care proposals.

I am interested in hearing directly from HEDIR readers, or seeing a discussion on this site about the worth of health education requirements for university students and what content readers here believe should be the highest priority.  Thanks for whatever consideration you are able to give this request.
