Hello HEDIR colleagues,
My apologies to those who may be receiving this twice. I sent this last week when the HEDIR server went down. I have not been able to locate it in the archives, so assume it did not post.
I am exploring the use off-the-shelf software that allows you to create tailored health information.
I have developed many tailored programs and communication over the last 10 years, but have always used highly skilled programmers to do so. My team is very interested in trying out software that allows us to develop our messages, algorithms, communication layout, etc. that could ultimately be used by practitioners. I am familiar with FileMaker Pro, but not anything else that could do the job.
If you have ever used any off the shelf software application (or combination of applications) to create tailored health messages, could you let me know what you used?
Many thanks,
Suzanne

Hi Tom,
Thanks for the post. Yes, I did have two articles published (mid 1980s and mid 1990s) on assessing personal health courses. I did do one around 2000 but never followed through with publishing it.
Those two articles are:
Kittleson, M.J., & Ragon, B.M. (1984). A survey of health requirements in American universities. Journal of School Health, 54(2), 91-92.
And
Kittleson, M.J., & DeBarr, K. (1991). Ascertaining the status of general health education courses in American universities and colleges. Journal of School Health, 61(8), 339-342.
The issue I found with the 1991 that became a real issue in the non-published 2000 study was that the concept of personal health was really taken over by those in physical education. When I asked if they had a personal health course and they would say yes, it was basically a physical education activity course...for the 2000 I had to carefully delineate what consisted of a personal health course...that was part of the reason the study was never published.
I'll be curious to hear the responses of the HEDIR regarding your questions.

Mark Kittleson and other Colleagues:
Occasionally I have seen inquiries on this list, expressed with urgency, seeking feedback defending health education and related required courses in universities and other school settings. Fortunately, my request today is not borne of an imminent threat to the Personal Wellness undergraduate requirement on my own campus (University of Northern Iowa), but this course, having existed mostly unchanged for 21 years, is getting an appropriate review by students, health education faculty, and other faculty committees. It is my recollection, Mark, that quite some time ago, you wrote an article about health education general education requirements at the university level.
Our course is, I believe, a traditional personal wellness course, serving approximately 1800 students annually. In twice-a-week lectures, it addresses decision making, stress management, physical activity, nutrition, and contemporary health threats (cancer, binge drinking,
etc.) Students also participate in physical activity at least twice a week, including a half semester of aerobic activity, and a half semester of what we have labeled "lifetime activity" (scuba, dancing, ice climbing, back packing are examples).
We are reflecting on how we might best meet 21st-century students' needs and I am asking HEDIR participants to reflect on the place of such a class among the liberal arts core requirements of American universities. For example, we have never addressed health care economics or policy, but some feel such a course has the potential to prepare students to soundly evaluate insurance providers', politicians'
and policy makers' claims about universal health care proposals.
I am interested in hearing directly from HEDIR readers, or seeing a discussion on this site about the worth of health education requirements for university students and what content readers here believe should be the highest priority. Thanks for whatever consideration you are able to give this request.
Tom Davis - Northern Iowa

Interesting post. At East Carolina University we have a required personal health course that we provide to over 4000 students a year.
We recently did an evaluation of the course to determine the effectiveness of such a course. The evaluation determined it was effective with regard to health knowledge and behaviors. The article is coming out in the Journal of General Education in the very near future. Below is the 50 word abstract and the citation.
Abstract: College General Education courses provide fundamental knowledge and abilities essential for future success. People with risky behaviors, diabetes, obesity, depression, and other problems represent reasons for health status concerns. This paper describes the need for a required general education health course in college and evaluates an example personal health course.

Tom and Mark;
I am currently doing my applied dissertation on this topic. I am a DHEd student at AT Still University and teach at taylor University in Indiana. We have required a "Fitness for Life" course for years here and I am looking at how to revise the course from a traditional fitness course to more of a health related fitness course. Since our course is also taught by physical educators, they sometimes struggle trying to understand what there is to change. In the past the course has been taught with the major focus on fitness (muscular strength, endurance flexibility) and nutrition (including assessment) since that is where the PE/coach professor's expertise has normally been. Subjects like stress management, cancer prevention, STDs, etc... were minimally covered depending on the interest of the professor or time remaining in the semester. We have used the Hoeger and Hoeger text for years. Students participate in a 10 week exercise program but it has been self-reported. We do pre and post testing for aerobic and muscular strength. I'd love to hear what others are doing with this as well.
